(Ghurar al-Hikam: Taking Lessons And Examples)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

مَنْ لَمْ يَعْتَبِرْ بِغِيَرِ الدُّنيا وصُرُوفِها لَمْ تَنْجَعْ فيهِ المَواعِظُ۔

This Hadith emphasizes the importance of reflecting upon the events and circumstances of this world, as they serve as valuable lessons for us. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (ya'tabir) "عَتَبَرَ" in the Hadith means to take lessons, to reflect, and to ponder upon. It implies a deep understanding and contemplation of the events that occur around us. The word (ad-dunya) "الدُّنيا" refers to this worldly life, with all its transient and temporary nature. (suroofiha) "صُرُوفِها" refers to the various ups and downs, trials and tribulations, and the changing circumstances that we encounter in this life.

The Quran repeatedly emphasizes the importance of reflecting upon the signs of Allah in the world around us. In Surah Al-Imran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 3:190)

Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding.

This verse encourages us to contemplate the natural phenomena and the cycles of day and night, which are a reminder of the power and wisdom of Allah.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Jathiyah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 40:21)

Have they not traveled through the earth and observed how was the end of those before them? They were greater than them in power, and they plowed the earth and built it up more than they have built it up, and their messengers came to them with clear evidences. And Allah would not ever have wronged them, but they were wronging themselves.

This verse encourages us to reflect upon the rise and fall of previous civilizations, and the consequences they faced due to their actions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of taking lessons from the vicissitudes of this world. It reminds us that the events and circumstances we encounter are not mere coincidences, but rather they hold valuable lessons for us to learn and grow from. By reflecting upon these lessons, we can gain a deeper understanding of the purpose of our existence and the guidance provided by Allah.

For example, when we witness the devastation caused by natural disasters, such as earthquakes or floods, we are reminded of the fragility of this worldly life. It serves as a reminder that our focus should not solely be on accumulating material possessions, but rather on seeking the pleasure of Allah and preparing for the eternal life to come. This reflection can motivate us to engage in acts of charity, to help those affected by such disasters, and to be grateful for the blessings we have been bestowed with.

Similarly, when we witness the rise and fall of nations, the injustices and oppressions that occur, and the consequences faced by those who transgress the boundaries set by Allah, we are reminded of the importance of adhering to the principles of justice, compassion, and righteousness. This reflection can motivate us to actively work towards establishing justice in our societies, to speak out against oppression, and to strive for the betterment of humanity as a whole.

By taking lessons from the vicissitudes of this world, we can develop a deeper understanding of the guidance provided by Allah in the Quran. We can align our actions with the teachings of Islam and strive to become better Muslims. This reflection enables us to make informed decisions, to prioritize our actions, and to live a life that is pleasing to Allah.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of reflecting upon the events and circumstances of this world. By taking lessons from these vicissitudes, we can gain a deeper understanding of the purpose of our existence and the guidance provided by Allah in the Quran. This reflection motivates us to align our actions with the teachings of Islam and strive for the betterment of ourselves and society as a whole. May Allah grant us the ability to reflect upon His signs and to derive valuable lessons from them.
