(Ghurar al-Hikam: Repentance And Returning (To Allah))

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for all Muslims to be cautious in their actions and to avoid falling into the trap of committing sins. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, advises us to refrain from hastening towards sinful acts and to not delay seeking repentance. By doing so, we can prevent the consequences of our actions from becoming more severe and the punishment from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) from increasing.

Let us delve deeper into the important words of this Hadith. The word (tuslifa) "تُسْلِفَ" means to make haste or rush towards something. In this context, it refers to the act of hastily engaging in sinful actions without considering the consequences. On the other hand, (tusawwifa) "تُسَوِّفَ" means to delay or procrastinate. Here, it signifies the act of postponing repentance and not seeking forgiveness immediately after committing a sin.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-A'raf (7:51), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us about the consequences of hastening towards sin:

Those who took their religion as distraction and amusement and whom the worldly life deluded - so today We will forget them just as they forgot the meeting of this Day of theirs and for having rejected Our verses.

This verse emphasizes that those who rush towards sinful acts and neglect their religious obligations will be forgotten by Allah on the Day of Judgment.

Furthermore, delaying repentance is also condemned in the Quran. In Surah Al-Hadid (57:16), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:

Has the time not come for those who have believed that their hearts should become humbly submissive at the remembrance of Allah and what has come down of the truth?

This verse reminds us that believers should not delay seeking repentance and turning back to Allah, as the time for sincere remorse and submission is always now.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice in this Hadith is rooted in the understanding that sins have consequences and that delaying repentance can lead to a greater punishment. When we hastily engage in sinful acts, we not only distance ourselves from Allah's mercy but also risk causing harm to ourselves and others. By delaying repentance, we prolong our separation from Allah's forgiveness and mercy, allowing the weight of our sins to accumulate.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we realize the importance of self-awareness and self-control. It urges us to pause and reflect before engaging in sinful actions, reminding us that the temporary pleasure derived from sin is not worth the potential long-term consequences. It also emphasizes the urgency of seeking forgiveness and repentance, encouraging us to turn back to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) immediately after realizing our mistakes.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to be cautious in their actions and to avoid hastening towards sin while delaying repentance. By heeding this advice, we can protect ourselves from the severe consequences of our actions and seek Allah's forgiveness and mercy in a timely manner. May we all strive to follow the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and attain success in this world and the hereafter.
