إنَّ بِذَوي العُقُولِ مِنَ الحاجَةِ إلى الأدبِ، كَما يَظْمَأُ الزَّرْعُ إلَى المَطَرِ۔
The people of intellect are in need of good etiquette just as the plants thirst for rain.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Good Etiquette)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure and noble Ahl al-Bayt, and his righteous companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
The people of intellect are in need of good etiquette just as the plants thirst for rain.
This profound statement highlights the importance of good manners and etiquette for those who possess intellect and wisdom. Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith and explore its implications in light of the Quran.
Firstly, let us reflect upon the term (people of intellect) "ذَوَيْ العُقُولِ". This phrase refers to individuals who possess wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. These are the individuals who have the capacity to comprehend and analyze matters deeply. They are the ones who seek knowledge and strive to understand the world around them. In the context of this Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that even these intellectually advanced individuals are in need of good etiquette.
The term (good etiquette) "الأدبِ" encompasses a wide range of behaviors and manners. It includes showing respect, kindness, and consideration towards others. It involves speaking with wisdom, listening attentively, and treating others with fairness and justice. Good etiquette is not limited to formalities; rather, it permeates all aspects of our interactions with fellow human beings.
To understand the significance of good etiquette, let us turn to the Quran. In Surah Al-Hujurat, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 49:11)
O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers
This verse highlights the importance of treating others with respect and refraining from ridiculing or insulting them. It reminds us that good etiquette involves recognizing the inherent worth and dignity of every individual, regardless of their background or status. By adhering to good etiquette, we create an atmosphere of harmony and unity within society.
Another verse that sheds light on the significance of good etiquette is found in Surah Al-Isra, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 17:24)
And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, 'My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when I was] small'
This verse emphasizes the importance of showing humility and kindness towards our parents. It teaches us that good etiquette extends to our relationships with our family members and elders. By treating them with respect and compassion, we not only fulfill our obligations but also cultivate a loving and harmonious family environment.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) draws a parallel between the people of intellect and plants thirsting for rain. Just as plants require water to grow and flourish, the people of intellect require good etiquette to nurture their intellectual growth and development. Without good manners, knowledge and wisdom can become hollow and devoid of true value.
When individuals of intellect possess good etiquette, they become role models for others. Their words and actions inspire and uplift those around them. They create an environment of respect, empathy, and understanding. Good etiquette fosters healthy relationships, promotes effective communication, and strengthens the fabric of society.
Furthermore, good etiquette is not limited to our interactions with fellow human beings. It extends to our relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) as well. The Quran repeatedly emphasizes the importance of humility, gratitude, and reverence in our worship. By observing good etiquette in our acts of worship, we demonstrate our sincerity and devotion to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that good etiquette is essential for individuals of intellect. It highlights the significance of treating others with respect, kindness, and consideration. By adhering to good etiquette, we not only nurture our own intellectual growth but also contribute to the betterment of society. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and understanding to embody good etiquette in all aspects of our lives.
