(Ghurar al-Hikam: Patience And The Patient)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

الصبر على النوائب ينيل شرف المراتب

which translates to

Patience in the face of calamities makes one attain honourable ranks.

This enlightening saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of patience in times of adversity and the rewards it brings in the sight of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

The word (patience) "الصبر" is derived from the root word "صَبَرَ" which means to endure, persevere, and remain steadfast. Patience is not simply the absence of complaining or despair, but rather it is a virtue that encompasses a state of inner calmness, acceptance, and trust in Allah's decree. It is the ability to control one's emotions and reactions during difficult times.

The term (calamities) "النوائب" refers to the trials, tribulations, and hardships that one may face in life. These can include physical, emotional, or financial difficulties, as well as challenges in relationships or personal struggles. Calamities are a test from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) to assess our faith, patience, and reliance on Him.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that through patience in the face of calamities, one can attain (honourable ranks) "شَرَفَ المَراتِب". This refers to the elevated spiritual status and rewards that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bestows upon those who remain patient and steadfast in times of adversity. It is through patience that one can rise above their circumstances and achieve a higher level of closeness to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

The importance of patience is emphasized in the Quran as well. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:153),

O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.

This verse highlights that patience is not only a means of seeking help from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), but it is also a characteristic that brings the believers closer to Him.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Imran (3:200), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

O you who have believed, persevere and endure and remain stationed and fear Allah that you may be successful.

This verse emphasizes the importance of perseverance and endurance in the face of challenges, as it leads to success in this life and the hereafter.

The consequences of practicing patience in the face of calamities are manifold. Firstly, it strengthens our relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) as we demonstrate our trust in His wisdom and plan for us. Secondly, it allows us to develop resilience and inner strength, enabling us to navigate through life's challenges with grace and composure. Thirdly, it serves as a means of purification and self-improvement, as we learn valuable lessons from our trials and strive to become better individuals.

Moreover, practicing patience in the face of calamities can inspire others and serve as a source of motivation and encouragement. When others witness our steadfastness and reliance on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), they may be inspired to do the same and find solace in their own difficulties.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the exemplary patience demonstrated by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) throughout his life. Despite facing numerous trials and tribulations, he remained steadfast and unwavering in his faith. His patience in the face of adversity serves as a timeless example for Muslims to emulate.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of patience in the face of calamities. By remaining patient and steadfast, we can attain honourable ranks in the sight of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Patience enables us to strengthen our relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), develop resilience, and inspire others. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to practice patience in all aspects of our lives and reward us abundantly for our steadfastness.
