Hadith #3222

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

A praiseworthy character is one of the fruits of intelligence.

This beautiful Hadith highlights the close relationship between intelligence and character. Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith by exploring the key words and their meanings.

The word (khulq) "خُلق" refers to character or disposition. It encompasses the moral qualities and behavior of an individual. It is through one's character that their true essence is reflected. The word (mahmood) "مَحْمُود" means praiseworthy or commendable. It signifies a character that is admired and respected by others. Lastly, the word (aql) "عَقْل" translates to intelligence or intellect. It refers to the ability to reason, understand, and make sound judgments.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, we turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of good character and its correlation with intelligence. In Surah Al-Qalam, verse 4, Allah says,

And indeed, you are of a great moral character.

This verse highlights the praiseworthy character of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), who was known for his impeccable conduct and noble traits. It is through his intelligence and wisdom that he was able to embody such an exemplary character.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas, verse 14, Allah mentions Prophet Musa (Moses) (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and describes him as,

And when he reached his full strength and was [mentally] mature, We bestowed upon him judgement and knowledge.

This verse illustrates the connection between intelligence and the ability to make wise judgments. Prophet Musa's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) intelligence enabled him to fulfill his role as a leader and make righteous decisions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that a praiseworthy character is a direct result of intelligence. Intelligence allows an individual to understand the consequences of their actions and make choices that align with moral values. It enables them to exercise self-control, empathy, and patience in their interactions with others. An intelligent person recognizes the importance of honesty, humility, and compassion, which are all essential components of a praiseworthy character.

For example, an intelligent person would refrain from spreading rumors or engaging in backbiting, as they understand the negative impact it can have on individuals and society. They would strive to be just and fair in their dealings, recognizing the rights of others. They would also exhibit forgiveness and kindness, even in the face of adversity.

Conversely, a lack of intelligence can lead to a flawed character. Without the ability to reason and understand the consequences of their actions, individuals may engage in dishonesty, arrogance, and cruelty. They may prioritize their own interests over the well-being of others, causing harm and discord.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the inseparable connection between intelligence and a praiseworthy character. Intelligence enables individuals to make wise judgments, understand the consequences of their actions, and embody noble qualities.
