البَشاشَةُ أحَدُ القَرائَيْنِ۔
Cheerfulness is one of the two forms of hospitality.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Being Cheerful And Smiling)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Cheerfulness is one of the two forms of hospitality.
This Hadith emphasizes the importance of being cheerful and welcoming towards others, as it is a form of hospitality. To understand the depth of this statement, let us delve into the meanings of the key words in this Hadith.
The word (bashashah) "بَشاشَةُ" refers to cheerfulness, happiness, or a joyful disposition. It is derived from the root word (basha) "بَشَّ", which means to be glad or to rejoice. This word highlights the importance of having a positive and pleasant demeanor towards others.
The term (al-qarayn) "القَرائَيْنِ" is translated as "the two forms" or "the two types." It is derived from the root word (qarana) "قَرَنَ", which means to pair or to join together. In this context, it refers to the two aspects or manifestations of hospitality.
To further understand the significance of cheerfulness as a form of hospitality, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11),
O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.
This verse highlights the importance of treating others with respect and avoiding ridicule or insults. By being cheerful and welcoming, we create an atmosphere of kindness and acceptance, which is an essential aspect of hospitality. When we greet others with a smile and a warm demeanor, we make them feel valued and appreciated.
Another Quranic verse that supports the concept of cheerfulness as a form of hospitality is found in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:83), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And [recall] when We took the covenant from the Children of Israel, [enjoining upon them], 'Do not worship except Allah; and to parents do good and to relatives, orphans, and the needy. And speak to people good [words] and establish prayer and give zakah.' Then you turned away, except a few of you, and you were refusing.
This verse emphasizes the importance of speaking good words to people, which includes being cheerful and kind. When we interact with others in a positive manner, we fulfill our duty of hospitality towards them. Our words and actions have the power to uplift others and make them feel comfortable in our presence.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement highlights the profound impact that cheerfulness can have on our relationships with others. When we approach others with a joyful disposition, we create an environment of warmth and acceptance. This, in turn, fosters stronger bonds and promotes a sense of unity among Muslims.
Furthermore, being cheerful and hospitable not only benefits those around us but also has a positive impact on our own well-being. When we choose to be cheerful, we cultivate a positive mindset and attract positivity into our lives. This positivity radiates from us and influences those we interact with, creating a ripple effect of happiness and contentment.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that cheerfulness is one of the two forms of hospitality. By being cheerful and welcoming towards others, we fulfill our duty of hospitality and create an atmosphere of kindness and acceptance. This aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which emphasize the importance of treating others with respect and speaking good words to them. Let us strive to embody the spirit of cheerfulness in our interactions with fellow Muslims, spreading joy and fostering strong bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bless us all with the ability to be cheerful and hospitable, and may He unite us in love and compassion.
