(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Ignorant And The Foolish)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the danger of being deceived by the empty praises of flatterers. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, describes such individuals as the most ignorant among people. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The key words in this Hadith are (mughtar) "مُغْتَرُّ" which means "deceived" and (mutamalliq) "مُتَمَلِّق" which means "flatterer". These words carry a negative connotation, indicating that the person being praised is being misled and deceived by the empty words of someone who is insincere. The flatterer makes the ugly appear beautiful to the person and instills a sense of dislike towards those who genuinely advise him.

This Hadith reminds us of the importance of seeking sincere advice and not being swayed by empty praises. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us in the Quran about the dangers of flattery and the importance of seeking sincere counsel. In Surah Al-Imran, verse 188, Allah says,

And never think that those who rejoice in what they have perpetrated and like to be praised for what they did not do - never think them [to be] in safety from the punishment, and for them is a painful punishment.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat, verse 11, Allah says,

O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.

From these verses, we can understand that Allah warns us against being deceived by the false praises of others. We should not be swayed by flattery, as it can lead us astray and blind us to our own faults. Instead, we should seek sincere advice and surround ourselves with individuals who genuinely care for our well-being.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the ignorance of those who fall into the trap of flattery. By being deceived by the praises of a flatterer, one fails to recognize their own shortcomings and becomes distant from those who offer sincere advice. This ignorance leads to a lack of self-improvement and growth.

The consequences of being deceived by flattery can be detrimental. It hinders personal development and prevents one from recognizing their own faults. Moreover, it creates a false sense of superiority and arrogance, as the person is led to believe that they are perfect and in no need of improvement. This arrogance can lead to the downfall of individuals and societies, as they become complacent and resistant to change.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we should strive to be aware of the dangers of flattery and seek sincere advice from those who genuinely care for our well-being. We should not be deceived by empty praises that only serve to stroke our ego. Instead, we should humbly accept constructive criticism and work towards self-improvement.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to be cautious of flattery and to seek sincere advice. We should not be deceived by empty praises that hinder our growth and prevent us from recognizing our own faults. May Allah guide us to surround ourselves with sincere individuals who offer genuine advice and protect us from the dangers of flattery.
