(Ghurar al-Hikam: Actions And Deeds)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The best of speech is that which is affirmed by good actions.

This beautiful saying emphasizes the importance of aligning our words with our deeds. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith and explore its significance in light of the Quran.

The word (ahsanu) "أحْسَنُ" in this Hadith means "the best" or "the most excellent." It signifies the highest level of goodness and perfection. (al-maqal) "المَقالِ" refers to speech or words. And (saddaqahu) "صَدَّقَهُ" means to affirm or validate. Finally, (husn al-fi'al) "حُسْنُ الفِعالِ" refers to good actions or righteous deeds.

This Hadith reminds us that true excellence lies not only in our words but also in our actions. It emphasizes the importance of sincerity and consistency in our behavior. Our words should be a reflection of our actions, and our actions should be a testament to the truthfulness of our words.

The Quran provides us with numerous verses that support the message of this Hadith. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Asr (103:3),

Except for those who believe and do righteous deeds and advise each other to truth and advise each other to patience.

This verse highlights the significance of both belief and righteous actions. It emphasizes that true success lies in combining faith with good deeds.

Similarly, in Surah Al-Qasas (28:77), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

But seek, through that which Allah has given you, the home of the Hereafter; and [yet], do not forget your share of the world. And do good as Allah has done good to you. And desire not corruption in the land. Indeed, Allah does not like corrupters.

This verse encourages us to seek the rewards of the Hereafter while also fulfilling our responsibilities in this world. It emphasizes the importance of doing good and avoiding corruption.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder that our words hold weight and should be backed by our actions. It teaches us that empty rhetoric and hollow promises are meaningless if they are not accompanied by righteous deeds. Our actions should validate and affirm the truthfulness of our words.

For example, if we claim to be advocates of justice, our actions should reflect this belief. We should actively work towards promoting justice in our personal lives and society. If we claim to be compassionate, our actions should demonstrate empathy and kindness towards others. It is through our actions that we truly embody the values we profess.

Furthermore, this Hadith highlights the importance of integrity and consistency in our character. It reminds us that our words and actions should align with each other and with the teachings of Islam. When our words and actions are in harmony, we become a source of inspiration and guidance for others.

Conversely, when there is a disconnect between our words and actions, it undermines our credibility and integrity. It creates confusion and doubt in the minds of others. Therefore, it is essential for us as Muslims to strive for consistency and sincerity in our speech and actions.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that the best speech is one that is affirmed by good actions. It emphasizes the importance of aligning our words with our deeds and highlights the significance of sincerity and consistency in our character. By practicing what we preach and embodying the values of Islam in our actions, we can truly become a beacon of guidance and righteousness for others. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to speak and act in a manner that pleases Him and benefits humanity.
