ما أبْعَدَ الاستِدراكَ مِنَ الفَوْتِ۔
How far is making amends [for something] from [its initial] loss!
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Rectification And Making Amends)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure and noble family, and his righteous companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
ما أبْعَدَ الاستِدراكَ مِنَ الفَوْتِ۔
This can be translated as,
How far is making amends [for something] from [its initial] loss!
This beautiful saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the immense difficulty and near impossibility of fully compensating for a loss or mistake.
To understand the depth of this statement, let us delve into the meanings of the important words used. The word (istidrak) "استِدراكَ" refers to the act of making amends or trying to rectify a situation. It implies the effort to compensate for a loss or mistake. On the other hand, the word (al-fawt) "الفَوْتِ" refers to the initial loss or mistake itself.
This Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) resonates with the teachings of the Quran, which repeatedly emphasizes the importance of seeking forgiveness and making amends for our wrongdoings. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 199:
Then race with one another in good deeds. Wherever you may be, Allah will bring you all together. Indeed, Allah is over all things competent.
This verse encourages Muslims to strive in performing good deeds and making amends for their mistakes. It highlights the importance of actively seeking opportunities to rectify our wrongdoings and make up for any losses or harm caused.
Furthermore, the Quran teaches us that seeking forgiveness and making amends is not only a means of rectifying our relationship with Allah, but also a way to attain His mercy and forgiveness. In Surah Al-Hujurat, verse 11, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:
O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.
This verse emphasizes the importance of seeking forgiveness and making amends in our relationships with others. It reminds us to refrain from ridiculing or insulting others, as this is a form of disobedience. Instead, we should strive to rectify our behavior and seek forgiveness from those we have wronged.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement highlights the difficulty of fully compensating for a loss or mistake. It serves as a reminder that while we should strive to make amends and seek forgiveness, it is essential to recognize the limitations of our efforts. Despite our best intentions and efforts, we may never be able to completely undo the consequences of our actions.
This Hadith also teaches us humility and the importance of seeking forgiveness from Allah and others. It reminds us that we are fallible beings, prone to making mistakes and causing harm. However, by acknowledging our mistakes, seeking forgiveness, and making sincere efforts to rectify our wrongs, we can strive towards personal growth and spiritual development.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder of the difficulty of fully compensating for a loss or mistake. It encourages us to actively seek forgiveness, make amends, and rectify our wrongdoings. However, it also reminds us of the limitations of our efforts and the need for humility in recognizing our fallibility. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us in seeking forgiveness and making amends, and may He grant us His mercy and forgiveness.
