(Ghurar al-Hikam: Sleep)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the negative consequences of excessive sleep. Let us delve into the essence of this Hadith and explore its implications in light of the Quran.

The word (gharim) "غَرِيمُ" in the Hadith refers to a rival or an opponent. Here, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) metaphorically describes sleep as a rival. Sleep is a natural and necessary part of human life, but when it becomes excessive, it becomes a rival that competes with our time and productivity.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further emphasizes the negative effects of excessive sleep by stating that it (yufni qasir al-umr) "يُفْنِي قَصِيرَ العُمْرِ", meaning it wastes the short life a person has been granted. This highlights the fleeting nature of life and the importance of utilizing our time wisely. Excessive sleep can lead to missed opportunities, unfulfilled potential, and a lack of productivity in both worldly and spiritual matters.

The Hadith also states that excessive sleep (yufawwitu kathir al-ajr) "يُفَوِّتُ كَثِيرَ الأجْرِ", meaning it causes one to lose a lot of reward. This highlights the spiritual dimension of the Hadith. Sleep, when it takes precedence over acts of worship and righteous deeds, can result in missed opportunities for earning rewards from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It reminds us of the importance of utilizing our time to engage in acts of worship, seeking knowledge, helping others, and striving for personal growth.

The Quran provides us with guidance and support for understanding the wisdom behind this Hadith. In Surah Al-Asr (Chapter 103, Verse 1-3), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:

By time, indeed, mankind is in loss, except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.

This verse emphasizes the importance of utilizing time wisely and engaging in righteous deeds. Excessive sleep can lead to a loss of time and hinder our ability to fulfill the requirements of faith and righteous actions.

Additionally, in Surah Al-Muminun (Chapter 23, Verse 80), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:

It is He who gives life and causes death, and His is the alternation of the night and the day. Then will you not reason?

This verse reminds us of the balance and alternation between night and day, highlighting the importance of utilizing both periods for productive activities. Excessive sleep disrupts this balance and can lead to a neglect of our responsibilities and duties.

Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and the supporting Quranic verses, we are reminded of the fleeting nature of life and the importance of utilizing our time wisely. Sleep is a necessary part of our existence, but when it becomes excessive, it can hinder our progress and lead to missed opportunities for both worldly and spiritual growth. We should strive to strike a balance between rest and productivity, ensuring that sleep does not become a rival that robs us of our time and potential rewards.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to utilize our time wisely and to prioritize our responsibilities and acts of worship. May He bless us with the ability to strike a balance between rest and productivity, and may He guide us to make the most of the short life we have been granted. Ameen.
