Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

A [simple] vocation with modesty is better than affluence with immorality.

This enlightening Hadith emphasizes the importance of leading a virtuous life, even if it means having a simple livelihood, rather than attaining wealth through immoral means.

Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (hirfah) "حِرفَةُ" refers to a vocation or occupation, while (iffah) "عِفَّةِ" signifies modesty, chastity, and purity. On the other hand, (ghinā) "غِنى" denotes affluence or wealth, and (fujūr) "فُجُورِ" signifies immorality, wickedness, or corruption.

To comprehend the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Qasas (28:77),

But seek, through that which Allah has given you, the home of the Hereafter; and [yet], do not forget your share of the world. And do good as Allah has done good to you. And desire not corruption in the land. Indeed, Allah does not like corrupters.

This verse emphasizes the importance of seeking the Hereafter while not neglecting our worldly responsibilities. It encourages us to engage in virtuous actions and avoid corruption. Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith echoes this sentiment by highlighting the superiority of a modest livelihood over wealth acquired through immoral means.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra (17:80), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

And say: 'My Lord! Cause me to enter a sound entrance and to exit a sound exit. And grant me from Yourself a supporting authority.'

This verse highlights the importance of seeking Allah's guidance and support in all aspects of our lives, including our vocation. It reminds us to prioritize righteousness and seek lawful means of sustenance.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize their moral values over material wealth. It teaches us that a simple and modest livelihood, earned through lawful means, is far superior to a life of affluence built upon immorality and corruption.

This Hadith encourages us to reflect on our own lives and the choices we make. It reminds us that our actions have consequences, both in this world and the Hereafter. By choosing a virtuous path, even if it means sacrificing material gain, we are aligning ourselves with the teachings of Islam and seeking the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his deep knowledge and wisdom. His words in this Hadith highlight his understanding of the importance of leading a righteous life, even in the face of worldly temptations. As Muslims, we should strive to follow his example and prioritize our moral values over material gain.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of leading a virtuous life, even if it means having a simple livelihood. It reminds us to prioritize our moral values over material wealth and to seek lawful means of sustenance. By doing so, we align ourselves with the teachings of the Quran and the noble example set by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all on the path of righteousness and grant us success in this world and the Hereafter.
