لا يَجْتَمِعُ العُنْفُ والرِّفْقُ۔
Violence and gentleness do not go together.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Leniency And Gentleness)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
لا يَجْتَمِعُ العُنْفُ والرِّفْقُ۔
This powerful statement translates to
Violence and gentleness do not go together.
Let us delve into the significance of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (unf) "عُنْفُ" refers to violence, aggression, and harshness. It encompasses any act or behavior that causes harm, inflicts pain, or violates the rights of others. On the other hand, the word (rifq) "رِّفْقُ" signifies gentleness, kindness, compassion, and tenderness. It embodies treating others with empathy, understanding, and respect.
The Quran emphasizes the importance of gentleness and forbids violence in numerous verses. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-An'am (6:151),
And do not kill the soul which Allah has forbidden, except by right.
This verse clearly prohibits violence and highlights the sanctity of human life. It teaches us that violence is contrary to the teachings of Islam and is only permissible in self-defense or in the pursuit of justice.
Furthermore, the Quran encourages Muslims to adopt a gentle and kind approach in their interactions with others. In Surah Al-Isra (17:53), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Tell My servants to say that which is best. Indeed, Satan induces [dissension] among them. Indeed Satan is ever, to mankind, a clear enemy.
This verse emphasizes the importance of choosing our words wisely and speaking with kindness and gentleness. It reminds us that harshness and aggression only serve to create division and discord among people.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith highlights the inherent contradiction between violence and gentleness. These two qualities are fundamentally incompatible and cannot coexist within an individual or a society. When violence prevails, it extinguishes the light of compassion and empathy. Conversely, when gentleness is embraced, it fosters harmony, understanding, and unity.
The consequences of violence are far-reaching and destructive. It breeds resentment, fear, and animosity among individuals and communities. It perpetuates a cycle of hatred and vengeance, leading to further violence and suffering. On the other hand, the practice of gentleness cultivates an environment of peace, love, and mutual respect. It allows for the resolution of conflicts through dialogue, understanding, and forgiveness.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his unparalleled wisdom and knowledge, understood the importance of gentleness in all aspects of life. He demonstrated this quality through his interactions with people, whether they were his friends or foes. His approach was rooted in compassion, even in the face of adversity. This Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to follow in the footsteps of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and strive to embody the virtues of gentleness and kindness.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ)
لا يَجْتَمِعُ العُنْفُ والرِّفْقُ۔
emphasizes the inherent contradiction between violence and gentleness. It aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which promote peace, compassion, and understanding. As Muslims, we are called upon to reject violence and embrace gentleness in our interactions with others. By doing so, we can contribute to the creation of a harmonious and compassionate society. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all in embodying the qualities of gentleness and may He grant us the wisdom to follow the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ).
