Successfully attaining what is sought is part of felicity.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Felicity)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مِنَ السَّعادَةِ نُجْحُ الطَّلِبَةِ۔
This can be translated as,
Successfully attaining what is sought is part of felicity.
Let us delve into the essence of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (najh) "نُجْحُ" in this Hadith refers to achieving success or attaining what one seeks. It signifies the fulfillment of one's goals and aspirations. The word (sa'adah) "السَّعادَةِ" means felicity or happiness. It represents a state of contentment and satisfaction. And the word (talibah) "الطَّلِبَةِ" refers to those who seek knowledge, students, or seekers of truth.
In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge and the rewards that come with it. In Surah Al-Zumar (39:9), Allah says,
Are those who know equal to those who do not know?
This verse highlights the superiority of those who possess knowledge over those who are ignorant. It emphasizes the significance of seeking knowledge and the benefits it brings to individuals and society.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mujadila (58:11), Allah states,
Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees.
This verse highlights the elevated status of those who believe and seek knowledge. It indicates that Allah will raise them in ranks and grant them success in this world and the hereafter.
When we reflect on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we understand that it encourages the pursuit of knowledge and the importance of achieving success in this endeavor. The felicity mentioned in the Hadith is not limited to material gains or worldly success alone. It encompasses the spiritual and intellectual growth that comes with seeking knowledge.
Successfully attaining what is sought can have profound consequences in the life of a student or seeker of truth. It brings a sense of accomplishment, fulfillment, and happiness. It motivates individuals to continue their quest for knowledge and to strive for excellence in their chosen fields. It also enables them to contribute positively to society and to fulfill their responsibilities as Muslims.
For example, a student who diligently seeks knowledge and successfully attains it can become a source of guidance and inspiration for others. They can use their knowledge to serve their community, to promote justice and equality, and to spread the message of Islam. Their success in seeking knowledge can have a ripple effect, inspiring others to follow in their footsteps and embark on their own journey of seeking knowledge.
Moreover, successfully attaining what is sought is not limited to academic or religious knowledge alone. It can also apply to other aspects of life, such as personal growth, professional development, and the pursuit of noble goals. When individuals strive to achieve their aspirations and work towards their goals with sincerity and dedication, they experience a sense of fulfillment and happiness.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of seeking knowledge and the rewards that come with successfully attaining what is sought. It encourages Muslims to strive for excellence in their pursuit of knowledge and to use it for the betterment of themselves and society. By seeking knowledge and achieving success, we can experience true felicity and contribute to the advancement of humanity. May Allah grant us success in our endeavors and bless us with the knowledge that leads to true happiness.
