(Ghurar al-Hikam: Being Cheerful And Smiling)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Keeping a cheerful face is a trait of the free.

This Hadith emphasizes the importance of maintaining a positive and pleasant demeanor, as it reflects the inner freedom and contentment of an individual.

The word (at-talaqah) "الطَّلاقَةُ" in this Hadith refers to a cheerful or happy countenance. It signifies a state of being joyful, optimistic, and radiating positivity. This word is derived from the root word (talaqa) "طَلَقَ", which means to be free or liberated. Hence, (at-talaqah) "الطَّلاقَةُ" can be understood as a manifestation of inner freedom.

To understand the significance of this trait, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13),

O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.

This verse highlights the importance of knowing and understanding one another, regardless of our differences. By maintaining a cheerful face, we create an atmosphere of positivity and approachability, allowing others to feel comfortable in our presence. It fosters unity and strengthens the bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood among Muslims.

Furthermore, the Quran encourages believers to be patient and steadfast in the face of adversity. In Surah Al-Baqarah (2:155), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient.

By embodying the trait of a cheerful face, we demonstrate our resilience and trust in Allah's plan. It is a reflection of our inner strength and ability to remain positive even in challenging circumstances. This trait allows us to inspire others and serve as a source of comfort and support for those around us.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, exemplified this trait throughout his life. Despite facing numerous trials and tribulations, he maintained a cheerful face, radiating positivity and hope. His unwavering faith in Allah's wisdom and his commitment to serving humanity served as a guiding light for Muslims then and continues to inspire us today.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of maintaining a cheerful face as a reflection of our inner freedom and contentment. By embodying this trait, we contribute to a positive and harmonious environment, strengthen our relationships with others, and inspire those around us. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to cultivate this trait and spread positivity in our lives.
