— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Injustice And Oppression)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "فِي الجَوْرِ الطُّغْيانُ" which translates to

In tyranny there is transgression.

This concise statement holds profound wisdom and provides us with important guidance on the nature and consequences of tyranny.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us first examine the key words used. (al-jawr) "الجَوْرِ" refers to oppression, injustice, or the act of exceeding the limits of fairness and equity. It encompasses any form of wrongdoing or mistreatment inflicted upon others. (at-tughyan) "الطُّغْيانُ" signifies transgression, rebellion, or the act of going beyond the boundaries set by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It implies an abuse of power and a violation of the rights of others.

The Quran provides us with numerous verses that emphasize the prohibition of oppression and the consequences it brings. For instance, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:8),

O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both. So follow not [personal] inclination, lest you not be just. And if you distort [your testimony] or refuse [to give it], then indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted.

This verse highlights the importance of upholding justice even in difficult circumstances, and it warns against distorting the truth or refusing to testify. It reminds us that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is fully aware of our actions, and He expects us to be just and fair in all situations.

Another verse that sheds light on the consequences of oppression is found in Surah Al-Anfal (8:25), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And fear a trial which will not strike those who have wronged among you exclusively, and know that Allah is severe in penalty.

This verse serves as a warning to those who oppress others, reminding them that they will not be immune to the consequences of their actions. Allah's punishment is severe, and it can encompass not only the oppressors but also those who remain silent or complicit in the face of injustice.

Now, let us delve deeper into the exegesis of the Hadith itself. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, highlights the inherent connection between tyranny and transgression. He teaches us that oppression inevitably leads to a violation of boundaries and an abuse of power.

When a tyrant gains control, they often exceed the limits set by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and trample upon the rights of others. They may impose unjust laws, suppress dissent, and exploit the weak. This transgression against the rights of individuals and society as a whole is a direct consequence of their tyrannical behavior.

Furthermore, this Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to stand against tyranny and oppression. It calls upon us to reject any form of injustice and to strive for a just society based on the principles of Islam. By doing so, we align ourselves with the teachings of the Quran and the example set by the Prophet Muhammad () and his noble companions.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ),

In tyranny there is transgression,

carries a impactful message for Muslims. It highlights the interconnectedness of oppression and transgression, and it urges us to stand against tyranny and uphold justice. By understanding the consequences of oppression and striving for a just society, we can fulfill our duty as Muslims and contribute to the betterment of humanity. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all on the path of righteousness and protect us from the harms of oppression.
