مَنْ لَمْ يَتَعَلَّمْ فِي الصِّغَرِ لَمْ يَتَقَدَّمْ فِي الكِبَرِ۔
One who does not learn in his young age, does not progress in his old age.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Student)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
One who does not learn in his young age, does not progress in his old age.
This beautiful saying emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge from a young age and highlights its impact on one's personal growth and development throughout life.
Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (ta'alam) "تَعَلَّمْ" translates to "learn" and encompasses the acquisition of knowledge, understanding, and wisdom. It signifies a continuous process of seeking knowledge, not limited to formal education but also encompassing self-study, reflection, and seeking guidance from knowledgeable individuals.
The word (sighar) "صِّغَرِ" refers to the young age, the period of childhood and youth when one's mind is receptive and impressionable. It is during this phase that individuals have the greatest capacity to absorb knowledge and develop their intellectual faculties.
On the other hand, the word (kibar) "كِبَرِ" refers to old age, the later stages of life when physical and mental abilities may decline. This Hadith suggests that if one neglects the opportunity to learn during their youth, they will find it challenging to make progress and acquire knowledge in their later years.
The importance of seeking knowledge from a young age is emphasized in the Quran as well. In Surah Al-Isra (17:80), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And say: My Lord! Cause me to come in with a firm incoming and to go out with a firm outgoing. And give me from Thy presence a sustaining Power.
This verse highlights the importance of seeking knowledge and guidance from Allah to navigate through life's challenges and make progress.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:269), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
He grants wisdom to whom He pleases; and he to whom wisdom is granted indeed receives a benefit overflowing.
This verse emphasizes that wisdom and knowledge are gifts from Allah, and those who are granted wisdom are blessed with abundant benefits.
The consequences of neglecting to seek knowledge in one's youth are far-reaching. Without a strong foundation of knowledge and understanding, individuals may struggle to make informed decisions, face difficulties in their personal and professional lives, and miss out on opportunities for growth and success.
Conversely, those who actively seek knowledge from a young age are more likely to develop critical thinking skills, broaden their perspectives, and make positive contributions to society. They become lifelong learners, continuously seeking knowledge and adapting to new challenges and opportunities.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a motivation for Muslims to prioritize education and intellectual growth from a young age. It encourages parents and educators to instill a love for learning in children and provide them with the necessary resources and guidance to acquire knowledge.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the significance of seeking knowledge in one's youth and its impact on personal growth and development. It urges Muslims to prioritize education, continuous learning, and intellectual curiosity throughout their lives. By doing so, individuals can equip themselves with the necessary tools to navigate through life's challenges, make informed decisions, and contribute positively to their communities. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bless us all with the ability to seek knowledge and benefit from it in this life and the hereafter.
