(Ghurar al-Hikam: Stinginess And Avarice)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds, and blessings and peace be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns us about the dangers of avarice or greed. Avarice is the intense desire for wealth or material possessions, which can lead to negative consequences in both our personal and social lives.

The word (shuhh) "شُّحَّ" in the Hadith refers to avarice or greed. It is a state of excessive desire for wealth and possessions, where one is never satisfied with what they have and constantly seeks more. This insatiable desire can consume a person's heart and lead them to engage in unethical or immoral actions to acquire wealth.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns us about the negative consequences of avarice. He states that it brings hate, tarnishes one's good qualities, and exposes one's faults. Let us delve deeper into each of these consequences and explore their significance in light of the Quran.

Firstly, avarice brings hate. When one is driven by greed, they become solely focused on their own interests and desires. This self-centeredness can lead to a disregard for the well-being and rights of others. The Quran reminds us in Surah Al-Hashr (59:9) that we should not let our wealth and possessions divert us from the path of righteousness and justice. Avarice blinds us to the needs of others and can create animosity and resentment among people.

Secondly, avarice tarnishes one's good qualities. When a person becomes obsessed with accumulating wealth, they may compromise their moral values and principles. The pursuit of material gain can lead to dishonesty, exploitation, and unethical behavior. The Quran emphasizes the importance of maintaining integrity and righteousness in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:188), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And do not consume one another's wealth unjustly or send it [in bribery] to the rulers in order that [they might aid] you [to] consume a portion of the wealth of the people in sin, while you know [it is unlawful].

Avarice can corrupt our character and tarnish the good qualities that we possess.

Lastly, avarice exposes one's faults. When one becomes consumed by greed, they may resort to unethical means to acquire wealth. This can lead to engaging in fraudulent activities, exploitation of others, or even resorting to theft. The Quran warns against such behavior in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:90), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone alters [to other than Allah], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful.

Avarice exposes the flaws in our character and highlights our willingness to compromise our principles for personal gain.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of contentment and gratitude in our lives. The Quran repeatedly emphasizes the virtue of gratitude and warns against the dangers of avarice. In Surah Al-Isra (17:80), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And say, 'My Lord, cause me to enter a sound entrance and to exit a sound exit and grant me from Yourself a supporting authority.'

This verse encourages us to seek Allah's support and guidance rather than being consumed by the pursuit of worldly possessions.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to be cautious of the dangers of avarice. It warns us about the negative consequences it brings, such as hate, tarnishing of good qualities, and exposure of faults. By reflecting on the teachings of the Quran, we can strive to cultivate contentment, gratitude, and ethical behavior in our lives, and avoid falling into the trap of avarice. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) protect us from the harmful effects of greed and bless us with contentment and righteousness.
