(Ghurar al-Hikam: Courage And The Courageous)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الشَّجاعَةُ أحَدُ الْعِزَّيْنِ" which translates to

Courage is one of the two honours.

This impactful saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the significance of courage as one of the two great virtues that bring honor and dignity to an individual.

Let us delve deeper into the meanings of the important words in this Hadith. (ash-shajā'ah) "الشَّجاعَةُ" refers to courage, bravery, and fearlessness in the face of adversity. It is the quality of being bold and resolute, even in the most challenging circumstances. (ahadu) "أحَدُ" means one of, indicating that courage is one of the two honours. And finally, (al-'izzayn) "الْعِزَّيْنِ" refers to the two honors or dignities.

To understand the significance of courage as one of the two honours, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of courage and bravery in the face of adversity. In Surah Al-Anfal, verse 60, Allah says,

And prepare against them whatever you are able of power and of steeds of war by which you may terrify the enemy of Allah and your enemy.

This verse highlights the need for courage and strength in defending the truth and standing up against oppression.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hajj, verse 39, Allah states,

Permission [to fight] has been given to those who are being fought, because they were wronged. And indeed, Allah is competent to give them victory.

This verse encourages Muslims to have the courage to defend themselves when they are being oppressed or wronged. It reminds us that Allah is with those who have the courage to stand up for justice and truth.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his unparalleled knowledge and wisdom, highlights the importance of courage as one of the two honours. Courage is not only a virtue that brings honor to an individual, but it is also a quality that enables one to fulfill their responsibilities and duties towards Allah and humanity. It is through courage that one can overcome their fears and face challenges head-on, striving for righteousness and justice.

The consequences of embodying courage are profound. It empowers individuals to resist oppression, fight against injustice, and defend the weak and vulnerable. It allows Muslims to uphold the principles of Islam and establish a just society. Courageous individuals become beacons of inspiration for others, motivating them to stand up for what is right and just.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of cultivating courage in our lives. We should strive to develop the strength to face our fears, to speak the truth even when it is difficult, and to stand up against injustice. By doing so, we not only honor ourselves but also honor the teachings of Islam and the legacy of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ).

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the significance of courage as one of the two honours. It is through courage that individuals can fulfill their responsibilities, defend the truth, and establish justice. By embodying courage, Muslims can become agents of positive change in society, bringing honor and dignity to themselves and the Ummah. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and courage to uphold the values of Islam and strive for justice.
