لا تَجْتَمِعُ الشَّبيبَةُ وَ الهَرَمُ۔
Youthfulness and senility do not go together.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Youth)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
لا تَجْتَمِعُ الشَّبيبَةُ وَ الهَرَمُ۔
This Hadith can be translated as,
Youthfulness and senility do not go together.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith by examining the key words and their significance. The word (shabiba) "شَّبيبَةُ" refers to youthfulness, vigor, and vitality. It represents the prime of one's life, characterized by strength, energy, and enthusiasm. On the other hand, the word (haram) "هَرَمُ" refers to senility, old age, and weakness. It signifies the decline of physical and mental abilities that come with the passage of time.
To understand the wisdom behind this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Waqi'ah, verse 17-18,
Then it is Our job to call them to account.
These verses highlight the fact that every individual will be held accountable for their actions and deeds. In the context of the Hadith, it emphasizes the importance of utilizing our youthfulness in a productive and righteous manner, as we will be answerable for how we spent this period of our lives.
Furthermore, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah Al-Hajj, verse 5,
O people, if you are in doubt about the Resurrection, then indeed, We created you from dust, then from a sperm-drop, then from a clinging clot, and then from a lump of flesh, formed and unformed - that We may show you.
This verse highlights the stages of human creation, from inception to maturity, and serves as a reminder of the transient nature of life. It encourages us to make the most of our youth, as it is a precious and fleeting phase that will never return.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith emphasizes the importance of recognizing the distinct qualities and responsibilities associated with different stages of life. Youthfulness is a time of energy, strength, and potential, where individuals have the ability to make a significant impact on their own lives and the lives of others. It is a time to acquire knowledge, develop skills, and contribute to society. Neglecting these opportunities during youth can lead to regret and missed potential.
On the other hand, senility is a stage where physical and mental capabilities diminish. It is a time of reflection, wisdom, and spiritual growth. While the body may weaken, the mind and soul can still flourish. Senility offers an opportunity to reflect on one's life, seek forgiveness, and prepare for the eternal life to come. Neglecting these opportunities during old age can result in a wasted and unfulfilled existence.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder to Muslims that each stage of life has its own unique blessings and responsibilities. It encourages us to make the most of our youth by utilizing our energy, talents, and resources in the pursuit of righteousness and the betterment of society. At the same time, it reminds us to honor and respect the elderly, recognizing their wisdom and experience.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ)
Youthfulness and senility do not go together
highlights the importance of recognizing and utilizing the distinct qualities and responsibilities associated with different stages of life. It urges Muslims to seize the opportunities presented by youth and to honor and respect the wisdom of the elderly. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to make the most of our youth and the grace to age gracefully.
