Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

By being pleased with oneself, vices and faults become manifest.

This enlightening Hadith highlights the importance of self-reflection and self-awareness in our spiritual journey. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this hadith and explore its implications in light of the Quran.

The key word in this hadith is (al-rida) "الرِّضا", which translates to "being pleased" or "contentment." It refers to a state of inner satisfaction and acceptance. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that when one is content with oneself, vices and faults become apparent. This implies that self-satisfaction can lead to complacency and a lack of self-improvement, ultimately allowing our negative traits to surface.

The Quran provides us with guidance on the importance of self-reflection and the need to constantly strive for self-improvement. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hashr (59:18),

O you who have believed, fear Allah. And let every soul look to what it has put forth for tomorrow - and fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do.

This verse reminds us to constantly evaluate our actions and intentions, and to be mindful of our accountability before Allah.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qiyamah (75:14-15), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

No! Rather, man desires to continue in sin. He asks, 'When is the Day of Resurrection?'

These verses highlight the tendency of human beings to become complacent in their sinful ways, neglecting self-improvement and the pursuit of righteousness. By being pleased with ourselves and failing to acknowledge our faults, we risk falling into this trap.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that true self-awareness and growth can only be achieved by recognizing and addressing our vices and faults. When we are content with ourselves, we may become blind to our shortcomings and fail to take the necessary steps to rectify them. This can lead to stagnation in our spiritual journey and hinder our progress towards attaining closeness to Allah.

To illustrate this point, let us consider the example of arrogance. If an individual is pleased with their own accomplishments and fails to acknowledge their arrogance, they will continue to exhibit this negative trait. However, if they recognize their arrogance and strive to overcome it, they can embark on a path of humility and self-improvement. By being aware of our faults and actively working to rectify them, we can purify our souls and draw closer to Allah.

In conclusion, the hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of self-reflection and self-awareness in our spiritual journey. By being content with ourselves, we risk allowing our vices and faults to manifest. It is only through recognizing and addressing our shortcomings that we can strive for self-improvement and spiritual growth. May Allah guide us all on the path of righteousness and grant us the wisdom to constantly evaluate ourselves.
