(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Judicious)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the virtue of being judicious and avoiding extravagance and waste. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith and explore its significance in light of the Quran.
The word (al-hazim) "الحازِمُ" in Arabic refers to someone who possesses the quality of being judicious, prudent, and wise in their actions and decisions. This person exercises self-control and restraint, avoiding excess and extravagance. The term (tajannaba) "تَجَنَّبَ" means to abstain or refrain from something. In this context, it signifies refraining from indulging in wasteful and extravagant behavior. The word (at-tabadhur) "التَّبْذيرَ" refers to waste or squandering of resources.
The Quran provides guidance on the importance of avoiding extravagance and waste. In Surah Al-Isra, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 17:29)
And do not make your hand [as] chained to your neck or extend it completely and [thereby] become blamed and insolvent.
This verse highlights the need for moderation and avoiding excessive spending that can lead to financial difficulties and societal disapproval.
Additionally, in Surah Al-Furqan, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) describes the servants of the Most Merciful, saying, (Quran 25:67)
And [they are] those who, when they spend, do so not excessively or sparingly but are ever, between that, [justly] moderate.
This verse emphasizes the importance of balance and moderation in spending, neither being extravagant nor miserly.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) encourages Muslims to adopt a judicious approach in their lives. By avoiding extravagance and waste, individuals can maintain a balanced and responsible lifestyle. This principle has far-reaching implications in various aspects of life.
In terms of personal finance, being judicious helps individuals manage their wealth wisely. It prevents them from falling into the trap of materialism and excessive consumerism, which can lead to financial instability and debt. By practicing moderation and avoiding wasteful spending, Muslims can ensure the well-being of their families and contribute to the betterment of society.
Furthermore, the concept of being judicious extends beyond financial matters. It encompasses the responsible use of all resources, including time, energy, and natural resources. By avoiding wastefulness in these areas, Muslims can lead more productive and fulfilling lives. They can prioritize their actions and make the most of their time, energy, and talents, benefiting both themselves and those around them.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder to Muslims of the importance of being mindful of their actions and avoiding extravagance and waste. It encourages them to adopt a balanced and moderate approach in all aspects of life, in line with the teachings of the Quran. By embodying the qualities of the judicious, Muslims can strive for excellence and contribute positively to their communities, ultimately seeking the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to be judicious in our actions and decisions, and may He bless us with the ability to avoid extravagance and waste. Ameen.
