(Ghurar al-Hikam: Patience And The Patient)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Through patience, [one’s legitimate] desires are realized.

This thought-provoking Hadith emphasizes the importance of patience in achieving our legitimate desires and goals in life. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith and explore its significance in light of the Quran.

The word "sabr" in Arabic refers to patience, perseverance, and steadfastness in the face of hardships and trials. It is a quality highly praised in the Quran and exemplified by the Prophets and righteous individuals throughout history. Patience is not merely passive endurance, but an active virtue that enables us to navigate through challenges while maintaining our faith and composure.

Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of patience in the Quran. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 2:155-156)

And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient, who, when disaster strikes them, say, 'Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return'

This verse highlights the reward and comfort that comes to those who remain patient during times of adversity.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Asr, Allah declares, (Quran 103:1-3)

By time, indeed, mankind is in loss, except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience

This verse emphasizes that true success lies in faith, righteous actions, and mutual encouragement towards truth and patience.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith reminds us that patience is not only a means to endure hardships, but also a path to achieving our legitimate desires. When we face obstacles and challenges in life, it is natural to feel frustrated and disheartened. However, through patience, we can maintain our focus and determination, allowing us to overcome these hurdles and attain our goals.

Patience enables us to persevere in our efforts, even when the results may not be immediate or apparent. It helps us to remain steadfast in the face of setbacks and delays, knowing that Allah's timing is perfect. By exercising patience, we develop resilience, discipline, and a deeper trust in Allah's plan for us.

For example, imagine a student who aspires to excel academically. They may face numerous challenges, such as difficult subjects, demanding schedules, and setbacks in their studies. However, through patience, they can maintain their focus, seek help when needed, and persistently work towards their goals. Eventually, their efforts will bear fruit, and they will achieve the academic success they desire.

Similarly, in our spiritual journey, patience plays a crucial role. We may encounter difficulties in practicing our faith, facing temptations, or dealing with the trials of life. However, by remaining patient, we can resist temptations, seek guidance from the Quran and Sunnah, and continue striving to improve ourselves. Through patience, we can attain spiritual growth, closeness to Allah, and the fulfillment of our spiritual aspirations.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the profound lesson that through patience, our legitimate desires can be realized. Patience is not only a virtue that helps us endure hardships, but also a means to achieve success in various aspects of our lives. By remaining patient, we can navigate through challenges, maintain our focus, and persistently work towards our goals. Let us strive to cultivate patience in our lives, drawing inspiration from the Quran and the noble examples of the Prophets and righteous individuals. May Allah grant us the strength and wisdom to embody this virtue and attain success in this world and the Hereafter.
