(Ghurar al-Hikam: One Who Is On The Right)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic phrase in the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) that we will be exploring is "غَرَضُ المُحِقِّ الرَّشادُ". The word (gharadu) "غَرَضُ" means "goal" or "objective", while (al-muhiq) "المُحِقِّ" refers to someone who is on the right path or following the truth. Lastly, (ar-rashad) "الرَّشادُ" signifies the right course or the path of righteousness.

To understand the meaning of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 256, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states:

There is no compulsion in religion. The right course has become clear from the wrong.

This verse emphasizes the importance of freedom of choice in matters of faith and highlights the distinction between the right path and the wrong path.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-An'am, verse 153, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:

And this is My path, which is straight, so follow it. And do not follow [other] ways, for you will be separated from His way.

Here, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) directs us to adhere to the straight path and warns against deviating from it, as doing so will lead to being distanced from His guidance.

Based on these Quranic verses, we can understand that the goal of one who is on the right path, as mentioned in the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), is to remain steadfast on the path of righteousness. This goal entails following the commands of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and avoiding the paths that lead to deviation and misguidance.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his deep knowledge and understanding of the Quran. He was a paragon of righteousness and a role model for all Muslims. His statement in this Hadith reflects his wisdom and insight into the true purpose of a believer's life.

When one sets the goal of remaining on the right course, they strive to align their actions, thoughts, and intentions with the teachings of Islam. This involves seeking knowledge, performing acts of worship, and embodying the moral values and principles outlined in the Quran. It requires constant self-reflection, self-correction, and seeking forgiveness for any shortcomings.

By adhering to the right course, a Muslim can attain spiritual growth, inner peace, and a strong connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). They become a source of guidance and inspiration for others, spreading goodness and righteousness in their communities. Conversely, deviating from the right path can lead to confusion, moral decay, and a loss of purpose in life.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of setting the goal of remaining on the right course. It urges us to seek knowledge, follow the teachings of the Quran, and avoid the paths of deviation and misguidance. By doing so, we can fulfill our purpose as Muslims and strive for a righteous and fulfilling life. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all on the straight path and grant us success in this world and the Hereafter.
