يَوْمُ الْعَدْلِ عَلَى الظَّالِمِ أَشَدُّ مِنْ يَومِ الْجَوْرِ عَلَى الْمَظْلُومِ!
The day of justice will be severer on the oppressor than the day of oppression on the oppressed.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Nahj al-Balagha — Peak of Eloquence: Hadith #341)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the concept of justice and its consequences. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this amazing Hadith.
The key words in this Hadith are (the day of justice) "يَوْمُ الْعَدْلِ" and (the oppressor) "الظَّالِمِ" and (oppression) "الْجَوْرِ" and (the oppressed) "الْمَظْلُومِ". The word (justice) "عَدْلِ" implies fairness, equity, and righteousness. It is the opposite of oppression and injustice. The term (the oppressor) "ظَّالِمِ" refers to someone who transgresses the boundaries of justice and inflicts harm upon others. On the other hand, (the oppressed) "الْمَظْلُومِ" refers to the one who is subjected to injustice and oppression.
To understand the essence of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:81),
And say: 'Truth has come, and falsehood has departed. Indeed is falsehood, [by nature], ever bound to depart.'
This verse emphasizes the ultimate triumph of truth and justice over falsehood and oppression. The day of justice will inevitably come, and it will be severe on the oppressor.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Anbiya (21:47), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
And We set the scales of justice for the Day of Resurrection, so no soul will be treated unjustly at all. And if there is [even] the weight of a mustard seed, We will bring it forth. And sufficient are We as accountant.
This verse highlights the divine justice that will prevail on the Day of Resurrection. No injustice will be tolerated, and every action, no matter how small, will be accounted for.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder that the consequences of oppression and injustice are severe. The oppressor may enjoy temporary power and control, but ultimately, justice will prevail. The day of justice will be more severe on the oppressor than the day of oppression on the oppressed.
This Hadith also serves as a motivation for Muslims to strive for justice and stand against oppression. It reminds us that we have a responsibility to speak out against injustice and work towards establishing a just society. It encourages us to support the oppressed and seek justice for them, knowing that the oppressor will ultimately face the consequences of their actions.
Moreover, this Hadith invites us to reflect on our own actions and attitudes. It reminds us to be mindful of our treatment of others and to ensure that we do not become oppressors ourselves. It urges us to embody the principles of justice, fairness, and compassion in all aspects of our lives.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the inevitability of justice and the severe consequences that await the oppressors. It serves as a reminder for Muslims to strive for justice, support the oppressed, and reflect on their own actions. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all to uphold justice and righteousness in our lives.
