Hadith #132

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الْتَّوَدُّدُ نِصْفُ الْعَقْل۔" This can be translated into English as,

Loving one another is half of wisdom.

Let us delve into the meaning of the key words in this Hadith. The word (al-tawaddud) "التوادد" refers to love, affection, and kindness towards one another. It signifies a deep sense of care and compassion that Muslims should have for each other. The word (nisf) "نصف" means half, indicating that this quality of love and affection is of utmost importance and holds great significance in the path of attaining wisdom.

To understand the profoundness of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:10),

The believers are but brothers, so make settlement between your brothers. And fear Allah that you may receive mercy.

This verse emphasizes the importance of brotherhood and unity among Muslims. By loving and caring for one another, we strengthen the bonds of brotherhood and create a harmonious society.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Imran (3:103), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided. And remember the favor of Allah upon you - when you were enemies and He brought your hearts together and you became, by His favor, brothers.

This verse highlights the divine favor bestowed upon the believers, as Allah united their hearts through love and brought them together as brothers. It is through this unity and love that Muslims can achieve wisdom and success.

The exegesis of this Hadith emphasizes the importance of love and affection among Muslims. When we genuinely care for one another, we create an environment of compassion, empathy, and support. This love extends beyond mere words and encompasses actions that benefit others. By showing kindness, helping those in need, and forgiving one another, we strengthen the bonds of brotherhood and create a society based on justice and compassion.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that loving one another is half of wisdom.
