(Ghurar al-Hikam: Judiciousness)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds, and blessings and peace be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

مِنَ الحَزْمِ اَلتَّأَهُّبُ والاِسْتِعْدادُ۔

This can be translated as,

From judiciousness comes preparedness and readiness.

Let us delve into the meaning of the important words in this Hadith. "Al-Hazm" refers to determination, decisiveness, and firmness in one's actions and decisions. It signifies the quality of being resolute and steadfast in the face of challenges. "At-ta'ahhub" means preparedness or being ready to face any situation. It implies being proactive and taking necessary measures in advance. "Al-isti'adad" refers to readiness or being fully equipped and prepared for any eventuality. It signifies being mentally and physically prepared to face any situation that may arise.

To understand the profound wisdom behind this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of preparedness and readiness in several verses. In Surah Al-Anfal, Allah says, (Quran 8:60)

And prepare against them whatever you are able of power and of steeds of war by which you may terrify the enemy of Allah and your enemy.

This verse highlights the significance of being prepared for battle, both in terms of physical strength and military equipment. It teaches us the importance of readiness in defending our faith and protecting ourselves from any harm.

Another verse that sheds light on the concept of preparedness is found in Surah Al-Mumtahanah. Allah says, (Quran 60:1)

O you who have believed, do not take My enemies and your enemies as allies, extending to them affection while they have disbelieved in what came to you of the truth, having driven out the Prophet and yourselves [only] because you believe in Allah, your Lord.

This verse emphasizes the need to be mentally prepared and vigilant in choosing our allies and friends. It reminds us to be cautious and discerning in our relationships, especially when it comes to matters of faith.

Now, let us reflect on the profound wisdom of Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement. The Hadith teaches us that judiciousness, or being resolute and firm in our actions, leads to preparedness and readiness. When we possess the quality of hazm, we are able to make sound decisions and take decisive actions. This determination and firmness enable us to anticipate potential challenges and take proactive measures to face them.

For example, in our daily lives, we may face various challenges such as exams, job interviews, or important presentations. By cultivating the quality of hazm, we can approach these situations with confidence and preparedness. We can study diligently, gather relevant information, and practice our skills, ensuring that we are fully equipped to face any obstacles that may come our way.

Furthermore, this Hadith also highlights the importance of being mentally and spiritually prepared. Just as physical preparedness is crucial in facing external challenges, mental and spiritual preparedness is equally important in dealing with internal struggles. By strengthening our faith, seeking knowledge, and engaging in acts of worship, we can develop the mental and spiritual resilience needed to face the trials and tribulations of life.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of judiciousness, preparedness, and readiness in our lives. By cultivating the quality of hazm, we can make informed decisions, take proactive measures, and be mentally and spiritually prepared to face any challenges that come our way. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to embody these qualities and lead a life of preparedness and readiness.
