فَسادُ البَهاءِ الكِذْبُ۔
Lying is the corruption of [one’s] prestige.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Lying)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "فَسادُ البَهاءِ الكِذْبُ۔" This can be translated into English as,
Lying is the corruption of [one’s] prestige.
Let us delve into the meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (bahaa) "بَهاءِ" in this Hadith refers to one's prestige, honor, or dignity. It encompasses the qualities and characteristics that elevate a person's standing in society. It is a reflection of their integrity, truthfulness, and trustworthiness. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of preserving this prestige and warns against the corruption that can arise from lying.
The Quranic teachings emphasize the significance of truthfulness and honesty. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:8),
O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm for Allah, witnesses in justice, and do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do.
This verse encourages Muslims to uphold justice and truthfulness, even in the face of opposition or animosity.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Tawbah (9:119), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
O you who have believed, fear Allah and be with those who are true.
This verse emphasizes the importance of surrounding oneself with truthful individuals. It highlights the positive influence that truthfulness can have on one's character and actions.
Lying, on the other hand, is condemned in Islam. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hajj (22:30),
That [has been commanded], and whoever honors the sacred ordinances of Allah - it is best for him in the sight of his Lord.
Lying contradicts the sacred ordinances of Allah and tarnishes one's prestige and honor.
Lying not only corrupts an individual's reputation but also has far-reaching consequences. It erodes trust in relationships, undermines the fabric of society, and leads to the breakdown of moral values. When people are deceived by falsehood, they are deprived of the truth and are unable to make informed decisions. This can have detrimental effects on personal, social, and even political levels.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of upholding truthfulness and preserving our prestige. By being truthful, we maintain our integrity, gain the trust of others, and contribute to a just and harmonious society. On the other hand, lying leads to the erosion of our character and the corruption of our reputation.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we should strive to be people of truth, honesty, and integrity. We should be mindful of our words and actions, ensuring that they align with the teachings of Islam. By doing so, we not only preserve our own prestige but also contribute to the betterment of our communities and the world at large.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us to the path of truthfulness and protect us from the corruption of lying. May He grant us the strength and wisdom to uphold our prestige and honor in all aspects of our lives.
