Do you not see the people of this world passing the evenings and mornings in different states? The dead being mourned and the living being condoled, the victim being afflicted and the visitor visiting him [to ask about his condition], and another who is sacrificing himself; and the one who is seeking this world while death seeks him; and the one who is heedless but not neglected; and those who remain behind continue to follow the footsteps of the those who preceded [them].

Do you not see the people of this world passing the evenings and mornings...

(Ghurar al-Hikam: This World)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he draws our attention to the various states and conditions that people experience in this world. He asks us, as Muslims, if we do not observe the constant flux and change that occurs in the lives of individuals. Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith and explore its meaning in light of the Quran.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) begins by highlighting the contrasting experiences of individuals in this world. He mentions the dead being mourned and the living being consoled. This reminds us of the transient nature of life and the inevitability of death. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in the Quran, (Quran 3:185)

Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your [full] compensation on the Day of Resurrection.

This verse emphasizes the reality of death and the need for us to prepare for the Hereafter.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further mentions the victim being afflicted and the visitor coming to inquire about their condition. This highlights the compassion and empathy that should exist within a community. The Quran teaches us the importance of caring for one another and supporting those in need. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 5:2)

And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression.

This verse encourages us to actively engage in acts of kindness and support, especially during times of difficulty.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) then mentions another individual who sacrifices themselves for the greater good. This selflessness and willingness to give up personal comfort for the benefit of others is a noble quality. The Quran teaches us the importance of selflessness and sacrifice. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 76:8)

And they give food in spite of love for it to the needy, the orphan, and the captive.

This verse emphasizes the virtue of giving and sacrificing for the sake of Allah and His creation.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) then draws our attention to the one who seeks worldly pleasures while death seeks them. This serves as a reminder that the pursuit of worldly desires should not overshadow our preparation for the Hereafter. The Quran warns us against becoming too attached to the material world. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 102:1-2)

Competition in [worldly] increase diverts you until you visit the graveyards.

This verse reminds us to prioritize our spiritual growth and not be consumed by the temporary pleasures of this world.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) also mentions the heedless individual who is not neglected. This highlights the mercy and forgiveness of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Even if someone is unaware or neglectful of their duties, Allah is still aware of them and has the power to guide them. The Quran assures us that Allah is the All-Knowing and the All-Merciful. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 41:40)

And your Lord is not unaware of what you do.

This verse reminds us that Allah's knowledge encompasses everything, even our hidden actions and intentions.

Lastly, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) mentions the continuation of following the footsteps of those who came before us. This highlights the importance of learning from the experiences and examples of those who preceded us. The Quran encourages us to reflect on the stories of the past and draw lessons from them. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 12:111)

There was certainly in their stories a lesson for those of understanding.

This verse reminds us of the wisdom that can be gained from studying the lives of the righteous individuals who came before us.

In conclusion, this Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder of the various states and conditions that individuals experience in this world. It emphasizes the transient nature of life, the importance of compassion and support, the virtue of selflessness, the need to prioritize the Hereafter over worldly desires, the mercy and forgiveness of Allah, and the wisdom to be gained from the examples of those who came before us. May we reflect on these teachings and strive to live our lives in accordance with the guidance of the Quran and the teachings of the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ).
