Hadith #5028

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Good conduct is the beauty of power and the fortress of authority.

Let us delve into the meaning of this statement in the light of the Quran.

The word (husn al-sirah) "حُسْنُ السِّيرَةِ" in the Hadith refers to good conduct or righteous behavior. It encompasses all aspects of one's character, actions, and interactions with others. It is a reflection of one's inner self and is an essential quality for every Muslim to possess. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of good conduct in the Quran in several verses.

In Surah Al-Qalam, Allah says, (Quran 68:4)

And indeed, you are of a great moral character.

This verse was revealed in praise of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), highlighting his impeccable conduct. It serves as a reminder to all Muslims that they should strive to emulate the Prophet's (ﷺ) noble character.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat, Allah says, (Quran 49:11)

O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.

This verse emphasizes the importance of treating others with respect and avoiding ridicule or insults. It teaches us to be mindful of our words and to refrain from using offensive nicknames. This is a clear example of how good conduct is not only praised but also commanded by Allah.

Now, let us explore the second part of the Hadith, which states, (jamal al-qudrah wa hisn al-imarah)

جَمالُ القُدْرَةِ وَ حِصْنُ الاِمْرَةِ

meaning

beauty of power and the fortress of authority.

This part highlights the significance of good conduct in positions of power and authority.

In the Quran, Allah mentions the story of Prophet Yusuf (Joseph) (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), who was granted great power and authority in Egypt. Despite facing numerous trials and temptations, Prophet Yusuf (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) maintained his integrity and exhibited exemplary conduct. This is evident in the verse where the wife of the Aziz, who was infatuated with Yusuf, said, (Quran 12:30)

Indeed, the women are seducing him. Indeed, he is of great vision.

Prophet Yusuf's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) good conduct not only protected him from falling into sin but also enhanced his reputation and credibility. It is a testament to the fact that good conduct is not only essential for individuals but also for those in positions of power and authority.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder to all Muslims that good conduct is not only a personal virtue but also a means to strengthen one's authority and influence. It is through righteous behavior that leaders can gain the trust and respect of their followers.
