دَوامُ الاِعْتِبارِ يُؤَدِّي إلَى الاِسْتِبْصارِ، ويُثْمِرُ الاِزْدِجارَ۔
Continually taking lessons leads to perspicacity and bears the fruit of restraint [from evil].

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Taking Lessons And Examples)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of continuously seeking knowledge and deriving lessons from it. The word (i'tibar) "اِعْتِبارِ" in the Hadith refers to the act of reflecting upon and pondering over the lessons and wisdom that can be derived from various sources of knowledge. It encourages Muslims to engage in a lifelong process of learning, contemplating, and applying the lessons learned to their lives.
This Hadith highlights the transformative power of seeking knowledge and applying it in our daily lives. It emphasizes that the process of continually taking lessons leads to (istibsar) "الاِسْتِبْصارِ", which can be understood as gaining insight, discernment, and a deeper understanding of the world around us. Through constant learning and reflection, we develop the ability to perceive things beyond their surface level and gain a deeper understanding of their underlying meanings.
The Hadith also mentions that this continuous process of seeking knowledge and gaining insight (yuthmiru al-izdijar) "يُثْمِرُ الاِزْدِجارَ", which can be translated as bearing the fruit of restraint from evil. This implies that the act of continuously seeking knowledge and reflecting upon it leads to the development of self-restraint and the ability to abstain from engaging in sinful or harmful actions. It helps individuals in making informed and righteous decisions, as they are guided by the wisdom and lessons they have acquired.
The importance of seeking knowledge and reflecting upon it is emphasized in the Quran as well. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Mujadila (58:11),
O you who have believed, when you are told, 'Space yourselves' in assemblies, then make space; Allah will make space for you. And when you are told, 'Arise,' then arise; Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees. And Allah is Acquainted with what you do.
This ayah highlights the importance of acquiring knowledge and acting upon it. It indicates that those who possess knowledge and act upon it will be elevated in the sight of Allah. This elevation is not only in terms of worldly status but also in terms of spiritual growth and closeness to Allah.
Another verse that supports the significance of seeking knowledge is found in Surah Al-Zumar (39:9), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Are those who know equal to those who do not know? Only they will remember [who are] people of understanding.
This verse highlights the distinction between those who possess knowledge and those who do not. It emphasizes that those who have knowledge and understanding are in a superior position compared to those who lack knowledge. It encourages Muslims to strive for knowledge and understanding, as it is a means of attaining higher levels of spiritual awareness and righteousness.
In light of these Quranic verses and the provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we can understand that seeking knowledge and continuously reflecting upon it is a fundamental aspect of the Islamic faith. It is a means of gaining insight, discernment, and self-restraint. By engaging in this process, Muslims can develop a deeper understanding of the world and make informed decisions that align with the teachings of Islam. It is through the pursuit of knowledge that individuals can grow spiritually and strive towards righteousness. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to seek knowledge and apply it in our lives, and may He bless us with the wisdom and understanding to make righteous choices.
