Truthfulness is the correspondence of speech with divine dispensation.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Truthfulness)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure and noble Ahl al-Bayt, and his righteous companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Truthfulness is the correspondence of speech with divine dispensation.

Let us delve into the significance of this statement in light of the Quranic teachings.

The word (siddiq) "صدق" in Arabic means truthfulness, sincerity, and honesty. It signifies the alignment of one's words and actions with the ultimate truth, which is the divine dispensation. It implies speaking the truth and adhering to it in all aspects of life, whether it is in our interactions with others or in our relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

To understand the significance of truthfulness, we turn to the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Ahzab (33:70),

O you who have believed, fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice.

This verse emphasizes the importance of speaking words that are just and truthful. It reminds us that truthfulness is not only a moral virtue but also a command from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:8), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives.

This verse highlights the obligation of speaking the truth even if it goes against our own interests or the interests of our loved ones. It emphasizes the importance of aligning our speech with divine justice.

Imam Ali's statement also highlights the concept of (wad' al-ilahi) "وضع الإلهي", which refers to the divine dispensation or the divine order. It signifies the divine plan and purpose behind everything that exists. The truthfulness of our speech lies in its conformity with this divine order.

In Surah Al-An'am (6:116), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And if you obey most of those upon the earth, they will mislead you from the way of Allah. They follow not except assumption, and they are not but falsifying.

This verse warns us against following the majority blindly and emphasizes the importance of aligning our speech with the truth, even if it goes against popular opinion.

The consequences of adhering to truthfulness are profound. When we speak the truth, we earn the trust and respect of others. Our words carry weight and credibility, and people are more likely to believe and rely on us. Moreover, truthfulness strengthens our relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) as it reflects our sincerity and obedience to His commandments.

Conversely, the consequences of falsehood and dishonesty are severe. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:81),

And say, 'Truth has come, and falsehood has departed. Indeed is falsehood, [by nature], ever bound to depart.'

Falsehood may seem appealing and beneficial in the short term, but it is ultimately transient and will be exposed.

Reflecting on Imam Ali's statement, we realize that truthfulness is not limited to our words alone. It encompasses our thoughts, intentions, and actions. It requires us to align ourselves with the divine order and to strive for sincerity and honesty in all aspects of our lives.

As Muslims, we should strive to embody the qualities of truthfulness and sincerity in our speech and actions. By doing so, we uphold the teachings of the Quran and the noble example set by the Prophet Muhammad () and his Ahl al-Bayt. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and guidance to be truthful in all that we say and do.
