(Ghurar al-Hikam: Sickness)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:

مَنْ كَتَمَ الأطِبّاءَ مَرَضَهُ خانَ بَدَنَهُ۔

This Hadith emphasizes the importance of seeking medical help and not hiding one's illness from physicians. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (katama) "كَتَمَ" in this Hadith means to conceal or hide. It implies that a person who conceals their illness from physicians is not only keeping it a secret but also neglecting their own well-being. By doing so, they are betraying their own body and health.

Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has emphasized the significance of seeking medical treatment and taking care of one's health in the Quran. In Surah Al-Isra, verse 82, Allah says:

And We send down of the Quran that which is healing and mercy for the believers.

This verse highlights that the Quran itself is a source of healing and mercy, indicating that seeking medical treatment is in line with the teachings of Islam.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 195, Allah says:

And do not throw yourselves into destruction.

This verse advises Muslims not to engage in actions that harm themselves. By hiding their illness from physicians, individuals are essentially throwing themselves into destruction by neglecting their health and well-being.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder to Muslims that seeking medical help is not only permissible but also encouraged in Islam. It is a means of taking care of one's body, which is a trust from Allah. By seeking medical treatment, individuals are fulfilling their responsibility towards their bodies and ensuring their overall well-being.

Hiding one's illness from physicians can have severe consequences. It can lead to the worsening of the condition, delayed diagnosis, and inadequate treatment. By seeking medical help, individuals can receive proper care, timely diagnosis, and appropriate treatment, which can ultimately lead to their recovery and well-being.

Moreover, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement reflects his profound knowledge and wisdom. As the cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad (), Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) possessed immense knowledge in various fields, including medicine. His words carry weight and authority, urging Muslims to prioritize their health and seek medical assistance when needed.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder to Muslims about the importance of seeking medical help and not hiding one's illness from physicians. It aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which emphasize the significance of taking care of one's health and well-being. By seeking medical treatment, individuals fulfill their responsibility towards their bodies and ensure their overall well-being. Neglecting one's health can have severe consequences, and therefore, it is essential to prioritize seeking medical assistance when needed. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us good health and the wisdom to seek medical help when necessary.
