Evil is the ugliest of gates.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Evil And The Wicked)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الشَّرُّ أقْبَحُ الأبْوابِ" which translates to

Evil is the ugliest of gates.

This concise statement holds meaning and serves as a reminder for Muslims to steer clear of evil and its consequences.

Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith. The word (sharr) "شَّرُّ" refers to evil or wickedness. It encompasses all actions, intentions, and thoughts that are contrary to the teachings of Islam and lead to harm and destruction. It is important to note that evil is not limited to physical actions alone, but also includes harmful speech, intentions, and even the slightest inclination towards wrongdoing.

The word (aqbah) "أقْبَحُ" means ugliest or most repugnant. It signifies the repulsiveness and abhorrence of evil. Just as a gate is the entrance to a place, evil acts serve as the gateway to a path filled with darkness and misery. This Hadith highlights the repulsive nature of evil, emphasizing its ugliness and the need to avoid it at all costs.

To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:256),

There shall be no compulsion in [acceptance of] the religion. The right course has become clear from the wrong. So whoever disbelieves in Taghut and believes in Allah has grasped the most trustworthy handhold with no break in it. And Allah is Hearing and Knowing.

This verse emphasizes the importance of choosing the right path and rejecting falsehood and evil. It highlights that true guidance lies in believing in Allah and holding onto His teachings.

Additionally, in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:2), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is severe in penalty.

This verse emphasizes the importance of joining hands in acts of righteousness and avoiding collaboration in sinful and aggressive behavior. It serves as a reminder that evil acts not only harm individuals but also have a negative impact on society as a whole.

Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we realize that evil acts are not only morally wrong but also lead to detrimental consequences. Engaging in evil deeds tarnishes our souls, distances us from Allah's mercy, and damages our relationships with others. Evil acts can also have far-reaching consequences, affecting not only the individual but also their families, communities, and society at large.

Therefore, as Muslims, it is incumbent upon us to strive towards goodness, righteousness, and piety, and to distance ourselves from evil in all its forms. We should constantly seek Allah's guidance and protection, and strive to purify our hearts and minds from any inclination towards evil. By doing so, we can safeguard ourselves and contribute to the betterment of society, creating a harmonious and righteous environment for all.

May Allah (تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to recognize and avoid evil, and may He guide us on the path of righteousness and goodness. Ameen.
