إسْتَعِدُّوا لِيَوم تَشْخَصُ فيهِ الأبْصارُ وتَتَدلَّهُ لِهَولِهِ العُقُولُ وتَتَبَلَّدُ البَصائِرُ۔

Prepare yourselves for the day when the eyes will be glazed, and the minds will lose their sanity because of its horror, and the perceptions will become dull.

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

إسْتَعِدُّوا لِيَوم تَشْخَصُ فيهِ الأبْصارُ وتَتَدلَّهُ لِهَولِهِ العُقُولُ وتَتَبَلَّدُ البَصائِرُ۔

This Hadith serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to prepare themselves for the Day of Judgment, a day of immense terror and awe-inspiring events.

Let us delve into the meanings of the important words in this Hadith. The word (tashkhasu) "تَشْخَصُ" means to become glazed or fixed, referring to the eyes losing their focus and becoming dull. (tatadallahu) "تَتَدلَّهُ" means to lose sanity or to become bewildered, indicating the state of minds being overwhelmed by the horrors of that day. Lastly, (tatabaladu) "تَتَبَلَّدُ" means to become dull or lose sharpness, signifying the decline in perceptions and insights.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) describes the Day of Judgment in various verses, emphasizing its magnitude and the impact it will have on humanity. In Surah Al-Hajj, Allah says, (Quran 22:2)

The Day you see it, every nursing mother will be distracted from that [child] she was nursing, and every pregnant woman will abort her pregnancy, and you will see the people [appearing] intoxicated while they are not intoxicated; but the punishment of Allah is severe.

This verse highlights the overwhelming nature of the Day of Judgment, where even the most natural instincts of a mother will be forgotten due to the intensity of the events. It also mentions the state of people appearing intoxicated, which aligns with the Hadith's description of minds losing their sanity.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qiyamah, Allah states, (Quran 75:12-13)

And the sight of man, on that Day, will be humbled. His eyes will be humbled.

This verse echoes the Hadith's mention of the eyes becoming glazed and losing their focus. It emphasizes the humbling effect of the Day of Judgment on mankind, where even the most arrogant individuals will be brought to their knees.

Reflecting on the Hadith, we can understand that Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is urging Muslims to prepare themselves mentally, spiritually, and emotionally for the Day of Judgment. The horrors and magnitude of that day will be so overwhelming that people's perceptions will become dull, their minds will lose their sanity, and their eyes will be glazed.

This Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to constantly strive towards righteousness, seeking forgiveness for their sins, and engaging in acts of worship and obedience to Allah. By doing so, they can hope to be among those who are granted protection and tranquility on the Day of Judgment.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to prepare themselves for the Day of Judgment. It highlights the immense terror and awe-inspiring events that will unfold on that day, causing the eyes to become glazed, the minds to lose their sanity, and the perceptions to become dull. By reflecting on the Quranic verses that describe the Day of Judgment, we can gain a deeper understanding of the significance of this Hadith and the importance of preparing ourselves for the inevitable return to our Creator. May Allah guide us all and grant us the strength to prepare ourselves for the Day of Judgment.
