The fruit of repentance is correcting the excesses of the self.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Repentance And Returning (To Allah))
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
The fruit of repentance is correcting the excesses of the self.
Let us delve into the meaning of this wise utterance and explore its significance in light of the Quran.
Firstly, let us analyze the key words in this Hadith. The word "tawbah" refers to repentance, which involves turning back to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) with sincerity and remorse for one's past wrongdoings. The word "istidrak" means to catch up or to rectify, while "fawarit" refers to the excesses or transgressions of the self.
To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 222:
Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant and loves those who purify themselves.
This verse emphasizes the importance of repentance and purification of the self, which aligns with the message conveyed by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in the Hadith.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-A'raf, verse 56, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states:
And cause not corruption upon the earth after its reformation. And invoke Him in fear and aspiration. Indeed, the mercy of Allah is near to the doers of good.
This verse highlights the concept of rectifying the excesses or corruption committed by the self. It reminds us that after seeking repentance, it is essential to strive towards righteousness and avoid falling back into sinful behavior.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the transformative power of repentance. It teaches us that true repentance goes beyond mere verbal expressions of remorse; it requires sincere efforts to rectify our actions and correct the excesses of our selves. Repentance is not a one-time event but an ongoing process of self-improvement and self-discipline.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, reminds us that the fruit of repentance is not only seeking forgiveness from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), but also actively working towards self-reformation. It is through this process of self-correction that we can attain spiritual growth and closeness to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
For example, if one has been involved in dishonest business practices, true repentance would involve not only seeking forgiveness from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), but also rectifying the harm caused by compensating those who were wronged and adopting ethical business practices moving forward. Similarly, if one has been engaging in harmful gossip, repentance would require not only seeking forgiveness but also refraining from such behavior and actively promoting positive speech.
The consequences of neglecting the correction of the excesses of the self after repentance can lead to a cycle of repeated sins and a lack of spiritual growth. However, when we sincerely strive to rectify our actions, we pave the way for a stronger connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and a more virtuous and fulfilling life.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that the fruit of repentance lies in actively working towards correcting the excesses of the self. It reminds us that true repentance involves not only seeking forgiveness from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), but also making a conscious effort to rectify our actions and strive towards righteousness. May we all strive to embody the teachings of this Hadith and continuously seek repentance and self-improvement in our lives.
