Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

One who deems what the Qur’an has forbidden to be permissible does not believe in it.

This impactful Hadith highlights the importance of adhering to the prohibitions outlined in the Qur'an. Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith, exploring its significance in light of the Qur'an.

The key word in this Hadith is (aman) "آمَنَ", which means to believe or have faith. It signifies a deep conviction and acceptance of the truth. The word (harramahu) "حَرَّمَهُ" refers to what the Qur'an has declared as forbidden or prohibited. It encompasses all the actions, behaviors, and practices that have been explicitly prohibited by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in the Qur'an.

To understand the gravity of this Hadith, we must turn to the Qur'an for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 187:

They ask you about the new moons. Say, 'They are measurements of time for the people and for Hajj.' And it is not righteousness to enter houses from the back, but righteousness is [in] one who fears Allah. And enter houses from their doors. And fear Allah that you may succeed.

This verse emphasizes the importance of following the prescribed rules and regulations set by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It is not enough to simply believe in the Qur'an; true faith is demonstrated by adhering to its teachings and avoiding what has been forbidden. By deeming what is prohibited as permissible, one shows a lack of belief in the Qur'an and its divine guidance.

Another verse that supports the exegesis of this Hadith is found in Surah Al-A'raf, verse 157:

Those who follow the Messenger, the unlettered prophet, whom they find written in what they have of the Torah and the Gospel, who enjoins upon them what is right and forbids them what is wrong and makes lawful for them the good things and prohibits for them the evil and relieves them of their burden and the shackles which were upon them. So they who have believed in him, honored him, supported him and followed the light which was sent down with him - it is those who will be the successful.

This verse highlights the role of the Prophet Muhammad () as the one who enjoins what is right and forbids what is wrong. It further emphasizes the importance of following the guidance of the Prophet () in order to attain success. Similarly, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), as the rightful successor and the gate to the city of knowledge, possessed a deep understanding of the Qur'an and its prohibitions.

The consequences of deeming what is forbidden as permissible are grave. By disregarding the prohibitions of the Qur'an, one not only displays a lack of belief but also risks falling into sinful behavior and straying from the path of righteousness. This can lead to spiritual and moral corruption, distancing oneself from the mercy and guidance of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of aligning our actions with the teachings of the Qur'an. It is not enough to merely believe in the words of the Qur'an; true faith requires us to live our lives in accordance with its principles and prohibitions. We must strive to understand and internalize the wisdom and guidance contained within the Qur'an, and make a conscious effort to avoid what has been forbidden.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to uphold the prohibitions outlined in the Qur'an. It highlights the significance of true belief, which is demonstrated through adherence to the divine guidance and avoiding what has been forbidden. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to live our lives in accordance with the teachings of the Qur'an, and may He guide us on the straight path.
