Verily the people who do good [to others] are more in need of doing it than those who request it from them.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Good Turns And Benevolent Actions)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of performing acts of kindness and goodness towards others. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states that those who engage in acts of goodness are in greater need of doing so than those who seek help from them.
Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith. The term "أهْلِ المَعْرُوفِ" refers to the people who do good or engage in acts of kindness. The word "مَعْرُوفِ" encompasses a wide range of virtuous actions, including acts of charity, kindness, and benevolence. These individuals are described as being in a state of constant engagement in performing good deeds.
On the other hand, the phrase "أهْلِ الرَّغْبَةِ إلَيْهِمْ" refers to those who request or seek help from the people who do good. These individuals are in need of assistance or support from others due to their circumstances or difficulties.
To understand the enlightening message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for further guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 177:
It is not righteousness that you turn your faces towards the East or the West, but righteous is the one who believes in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the Prophets, and gives his wealth, in spite of love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask [for help], and for freeing slaves.
This verse emphasizes the importance of giving to those in need, regardless of their circumstances. It highlights that true righteousness lies in believing in Allah and His teachings, and then acting upon those beliefs by giving generously to those who require assistance. This aligns with the message of the Hadith, which emphasizes the significance of performing acts of goodness.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ma'un, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns against neglecting the needs of others. He says in verse 7-9:
So woe to those who pray, but are heedless of their prayer, those who make show [of their deeds], and withhold [simple] assistance.
These verses serve as a reminder that performing acts of kindness and goodness is not limited to mere outward displays, but rather it requires genuine concern and assistance towards those in need. The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) echoes this sentiment by highlighting that those who engage in acts of goodness are in greater need of doing so, as it reflects their sincerity and commitment to fulfilling their responsibilities towards others.
The consequences of neglecting acts of goodness can have far-reaching effects. When individuals fail to fulfill their duty of helping others, it can lead to a breakdown in society, an increase in poverty and inequality, and a lack of compassion and empathy. Conversely, when individuals actively engage in acts of goodness, it fosters a sense of unity, compassion, and social harmony.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of embodying the qualities of kindness, generosity, and selflessness. It encourages us to go beyond our own needs and desires and to actively seek opportunities to help and support those around us. By doing so, we not only fulfill our obligations as Muslims but also contribute to the betterment of society as a whole.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder of the significance of performing acts of goodness. It highlights that those who engage in acts of kindness are in greater need of doing so than those who seek help from them. By referencing the Quranic verses, we find further reinforcement of this message, emphasizing the importance of giving to those in need and the consequences of neglecting acts of goodness. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us to be among those who actively engage in acts of goodness and fulfill our responsibilities towards others.
