Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

إطْرَحْ عَنْكَ وارِداتِ الهُمُومِ بِعَزائِمِ الصَّبْرِ، وحُسْنِ اليَقينِ۔

This Hadith emphasizes the importance of casting away the sorrows and worries that befall us by relying on resolute patience and virtuous certitude.

Let us delve deeper into the meaning of the key words in this Hadith. "وارِداتِ الهُمُومِ" refers to the sorrows and worries that come upon us. "وارِداتِ" is derived from the root word "وَرَدَ" which means to come or arrive. "الهُمُومِ" refers to the various concerns and anxieties that burden our hearts.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us to cast away these sorrows through two means: "عَزائِمِ الصَّبْرِ" and "حُسْنِ اليَقينِ". "عَزائِمِ" comes from the root word "عَزِيمَة" which means determination or resolve. In this context, it refers to resolute patience, steadfastness, and perseverance in the face of difficulties. "الصَّبْرِ" refers to patience, which is a virtue highly praised in the Quran.

Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:153),

O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.

This verse highlights the importance of patience as a means of seeking assistance from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) during challenging times.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) also advises us to rely on "حُسْنِ اليَقينِ", which means virtuous certitude or good faith. It refers to having a firm belief in Allah's (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) wisdom, mercy, and ultimate control over all affairs. This certitude allows us to trust in His plan and find solace in His guidance.

The Quran emphasizes the importance of having certitude in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). In Surah At-Tawbah (9:51), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

Say, 'Never will we be struck except by what Allah has decreed for us; He is our protector.' And upon Allah let the believers rely.

This verse reminds us to rely on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and have complete trust in His plans.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice to cast away sorrows through resolute patience and virtuous certitude carries profound wisdom. When faced with difficulties, we should adopt a mindset of patience and perseverance, knowing that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is with those who are patient. By having firm faith in Allah's (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) wisdom and control over all matters, we can find comfort and strength in knowing that He is the ultimate source of guidance and support.

This Hadith encourages us to develop a strong character and a positive outlook in the face of adversity. It teaches us to cultivate patience and certitude as essential qualities in navigating the challenges of life. By embodying these virtues, we can cast away our sorrows and find solace in the knowledge that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is always there for us.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength to practice resolute patience and virtuous certitude in our lives, and may He alleviate our sorrows and grant us peace and tranquility.
