إذاعَةُ سِرّ أُودِعْتَهُ غَدْرٌ۔
Divulging the secret that has been entrusted to you is a [form of] betrayal.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Secret And Confidential Discussions)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
إذاعَةُ سِرّ أُودِعْتَهُ غَدْرٌ۔
This can be translated as,
Divulging the secret that has been entrusted to you is a [form of] betrayal.
Let us delve into the essence of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (Izā'atu) "إذاعَةُ" refers to the act of disclosing or revealing something that was meant to be kept confidential. It implies the act of spreading or making known a secret entrusted to someone. The word (Sirr) "سِرّ" denotes a hidden or confidential matter, something that is not meant to be shared with others. And the word (Ghadar) "غَدْرٌ" signifies betrayal or treachery, which is a grave sin in Islam.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:12),
O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful.
This verse emphasizes the importance of avoiding negative assumptions and backbiting, which are closely related to the act of divulging secrets. When we spread someone's secret, we are essentially engaging in backbiting and causing harm to others. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) compares this act to eating the flesh of one's brother, highlighting the repulsiveness and immorality of such behavior.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:2), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) commands,
And do not let your hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do.
This verse reminds us of the importance of justice and fairness in our interactions with others. Divulging someone's secret is an act of injustice, as it violates their trust and harms their reputation.
The consequences of betraying someone's trust and divulging their secrets can be severe. It can lead to broken relationships, loss of trust, and emotional distress for the person whose secret was revealed. Moreover, it tarnishes our own character and integrity as Muslims. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11),
O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.
This verse highlights the importance of respecting others and refraining from ridiculing or insulting them. Divulging someone's secret is a form of disrespect and can lead to ridicule and humiliation. As Muslims, we are called to uphold the values of kindness, compassion, and trustworthiness.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we can understand that Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is reminding us of the importance of maintaining confidentiality and trust in our relationships. He is emphasizing the gravity of betraying someone's trust by revealing their secrets. By adhering to this teaching, we can foster an environment of trust, respect, and unity within the Muslim community.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to uphold the values of trustworthiness and confidentiality. Divulging someone's secret is not only a betrayal of their trust but also a violation of the principles of justice and respect. By adhering to this teaching, we can strengthen our relationships, preserve our integrity, and foster a sense of unity within the Muslim community. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us to be trustworthy individuals who honor the trust placed upon us.
