Hadith #5764

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of self-awareness and self-accountability. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) begins by stating,

How truthful is a person's testimony against himself and what witness is there against him better than his own deeds?!

This highlights the significance of one's own actions as a testimony to their character and true nature.

The Imam (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further explains that a person is truly recognized and known by their knowledge. Just as a strange tree is identified by the fruits it bears, a person's knowledge is the fruit that reveals their true nature. This implies that knowledge is not merely about acquiring information, but rather about the application and manifestation of that knowledge in one's actions and behavior.

To support this exegesis, we can turn to the Quran. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.

This verse emphasizes that true recognition and nobility are based on righteousness and piety, which are manifested through one's actions and behavior.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas (28:56), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

Indeed, you do not guide whom you like, but Allah guides whom He wills. And He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided.

This verse highlights that true guidance comes from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and is not determined by external appearances or claims. It is the knowledge and righteousness within a person that attracts the guidance of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement also emphasizes the importance of one's deeds as evidence of their true character. In Surah Al-Isra (17:80), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And say: My Lord! Cause me to come in with a firm incoming and to go out with a firm outgoing. And give me from Thy presence a sustaining Power.

This verse highlights the significance of seeking Allah's guidance and support in order to maintain steadfastness in one's actions and behavior.

The consequences of Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement are profound. It reminds us that our actions and deeds are a reflection of our true selves. It urges us to be conscious of our intentions and to align them with the teachings of Islam. It encourages us to seek knowledge and apply it in our daily lives, for true recognition and nobility lie in the righteousness of our character.
