(Ghurar al-Hikam: Shamelessness And The Shameless)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "ما أوْقَحَ الجاهِلَ۔" This can be translated into English as,
How shameless the ignorant one is!
In this impactful Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the audacity and lack of shame that is often displayed by those who are ignorant.
To understand the depth and significance of this Hadith, let us first examine the key words used. The word (awqaha) "أوْقَحَ" is derived from the root word (waqaha) "وَقَحَ", which means to be shameless, audacious, or bold. It refers to the lack of modesty or humility in one's behavior or speech. The word (al-jahil) "الجاهِلَ" refers to the ignorant person, someone who lacks knowledge or understanding.
In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of knowledge and warns against ignorance. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:6), Allah says,
O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.
This verse highlights the need to verify information and not act upon it blindly, as ignorance can lead to harm and regret.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mujadila (58:11), Allah states,
O you who have believed, when you are told, 'Space yourselves' in assemblies, then make space; Allah will make space for you. And when you are told, 'Arise,' then arise; Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees. And Allah is Acquainted with what you do.
This verse emphasizes the importance of knowledge and the elevated status of those who possess it. It encourages believers to give space to those who have knowledge and to follow their guidance.
Now, let us delve into the significance of Imam Ali's statement. The Imam (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the shamelessness of the ignorant person. This shamelessness stems from their lack of knowledge and understanding. Ignorance leads to arrogance and audacity, as the ignorant person is unaware of their own limitations and lacks the humility to seek knowledge and guidance.
The consequences of this shamelessness are far-reaching. The ignorant person may engage in harmful actions or spread misinformation without realizing the negative impact it can have on others. They may also disregard the wisdom and guidance of those who possess knowledge, leading to further ignorance and misguided behavior.
Imam Ali's statement serves as a reminder to Muslims of the importance of seeking knowledge and avoiding ignorance. It encourages us to be humble and open-minded, always willing to learn and grow. By acquiring knowledge, we can avoid the audacity and shamelessness that comes with ignorance.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we should strive to be individuals who seek knowledge, respect those who possess it, and act with humility and modesty. We should be cautious of spreading misinformation and harming others due to our own ignorance. By doing so, we can uphold the teachings of Islam and contribute positively to our communities.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and understanding to seek knowledge and avoid ignorance. May He bless us with the humility to recognize our own limitations and the audacity of ignorance. And may He guide us on the path of righteousness and grant us success in this life and the hereafter.
