(Ghurar al-Hikam: This World)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds, and blessings and peace be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he beautifully captures the fleeting nature of the times we spend in this world and the limited nature of its pleasures. Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith and explore its meaning in light of the Quran.

The Hadith begins by highlighting the temporal nature of the times we spend in this world. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The times of this world, even if they prolong, are short.

This emphasizes the brevity of our existence in this worldly life. No matter how long we live, it is but a fleeting moment compared to the eternity of the Hereafter. This notion is echoed in the Quran in Surah Al-Ankabut, verse 64, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And this worldly life is not but diversion and amusement. And indeed, the home of the Hereafter - that is the [eternal] life, if only they knew.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) then goes on to highlight the limited nature of the pleasures and enjoyments of this world. He states,

And its enjoyments, even if they are many, are few [when compared to the Hereafter].

This reminds us that no matter how abundant the pleasures of this world may seem, they are ultimately insignificant when compared to the everlasting joys of the Hereafter. The Quran affirms this in Surah Al-Imran, verse 185, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

But the Hereafter is better and more enduring.

This Hadith serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to prioritize the eternal life of the Hereafter over the transient pleasures of this world. It encourages us to detach ourselves from the materialistic pursuits that often consume our lives and instead focus on building a strong relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and seeking His pleasure.

By recognizing the fleeting nature of this world and the limited nature of its pleasures, we are motivated to invest our time and efforts in actions that will benefit us in the Hereafter. This includes performing acts of worship, seeking knowledge, helping others, and striving to attain the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). We are reminded of the importance of living a life of purpose and righteousness, as emphasized in the Quran in Surah Al-Kahf, verse 46, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

Wealth and children are [but] adornment of the worldly life. But the enduring good deeds are better to your Lord for reward and better for [one's] hope.

Furthermore, reflecting on the transient nature of this world and the limited nature of its pleasures helps us maintain a balanced perspective. It prevents us from becoming too attached to worldly possessions and comforts, and instead encourages us to adopt a mindset of gratitude and contentment. We are reminded of the importance of seeking true happiness and fulfillment through our connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and the pursuit of spiritual growth.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to prioritize the eternal life of the Hereafter over the transient pleasures of this world. It calls us to recognize the brevity of our existence in this world and the limited nature of its enjoyments. By reflecting on this Hadith and aligning our actions with its teachings, we can strive to lead a purposeful and fulfilling life, seeking the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and preparing for the everlasting joys of the Hereafter. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and guidance to live according to the teachings of the Quran and the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ).
