اَلعَدْلُ أنَّكَ إذا ظُلِمْتَ أنْصَفْتَ، والفَضْلُ أنَّكَ إذا قَدَرْتَ عَفَوْتَ۔
Justice means that you act equitably when you are oppressed, and kindness means that when you gain authority, you forgive.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Justice And The Just)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights two important virtues: justice and kindness. Let us delve into the meanings of these words and explore their significance in the light of the Quran.
The Arabic word (adl) "عَدْل" translates to "justice" in English. It refers to acting fairly and impartially, ensuring that everyone is treated equitably. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that when one is oppressed or wronged, they should respond with justice. This means that instead of seeking revenge or retaliating, one should strive to act in a just manner.
The concept of justice is deeply rooted in the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah An-Nisa (4:135):
O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both. So follow not [personal] inclination, lest you not be just. And if you distort [your testimony] or refuse [to give it], then indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted.
This verse emphasizes the importance of justice, even if it goes against our own interests or the interests of our loved ones. It reminds us that Allah is the ultimate judge, and we must strive to uphold justice in all circumstances.
The second virtue mentioned in the Hadith is (fadl) "فَضْل", which can be translated as "kindness" or "generosity." It refers to the act of forgiving and showing mercy when one gains authority or power. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) encourages us to exercise kindness and forgiveness when we are in a position of strength.
The Quran beautifully illustrates the importance of kindness and forgiveness. In Surah Al-Imran (3:134), Allah says:
Those who spend [in Allah's cause] during ease and hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people - and Allah loves the doers of good.
This verse teaches us that true kindness lies in restraining anger and forgiving others. It is a quality that Allah loves and rewards. By forgiving others, we not only display our generosity but also purify our hearts from negative emotions.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teachings on justice and kindness are profound and have far-reaching consequences. When we respond to oppression with justice, we break the cycle of violence and promote harmony in society. By forgiving others when we have the power to seek revenge, we foster an environment of compassion and mercy.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his exceptional knowledge and wisdom. His emphasis on justice and kindness stems from his deep understanding of the teachings of Islam. He exemplified these virtues in his own life, even in the face of immense challenges and opposition.
As Muslims, we should strive to embody the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) by practicing justice and kindness in our daily lives. We must remember that justice is not only about seeking our own rights but also about ensuring fairness for all. Similarly, kindness and forgiveness are not signs of weakness but rather manifestations of strength and nobility.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to act with justice and kindness in all aspects of our lives. May we follow the footsteps of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and strive to create a just and compassionate society.
