أكْيَسُكُمْ أوْرَعُكُمْ۔
The most sagacious among you is the most pious among you.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Sagacious)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "أكْيَسُكُمْ أوْرَعُكُمْ," which translates to,
The most sagacious among you is the most pious among you.
This enlightening saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the correlation between wisdom and piety. To fully comprehend the depth of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of the key words.
The word (akysukum) "أكْيَسُكُمْ" refers to the one who possesses sagacity, intelligence, and wisdom. This person is characterized by their ability to make sound judgments, exercise discernment, and act wisely in various situations. They possess deep insight and understanding, enabling them to navigate life's challenges with wisdom and prudence.
On the other hand, the word (awra'ukum) "أوْرَعُكُمْ" refers to the one who is most pious, devout, and God-conscious. This individual is deeply committed to their faith, constantly striving to please Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in all aspects of their life. Their piety is reflected in their actions, intentions, and character, as they adhere to the teachings of Islam with sincerity and devotion.
To further elucidate the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of wisdom and piety, and how they are intertwined. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 2:269)
And whoever is given wisdom has certainly been given much good. And none will remember except those of understanding
This verse highlights the immense value of wisdom and its association with understanding.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 49:13)
Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted
This verse emphasizes that true nobility and superiority lie in righteousness and piety. It is not based on wealth, lineage, or worldly status, but rather on the level of devotion and obedience to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder to Muslims that true wisdom is not merely intellectual prowess or knowledge, but rather it is deeply rooted in piety and God-consciousness. A person may possess great intellectual abilities, but if they lack piety, their wisdom may be misguided or used for selfish purposes. On the other hand, a person who is truly pious and God-conscious will naturally possess wisdom and make decisions that align with the teachings of Islam.
The consequences of embodying the message of this Hadith are profound. When individuals strive to be both sagacious and pious, they become beacons of guidance and role models for others. Their actions and decisions are based on divine wisdom and are in accordance with the principles of Islam. They become sources of inspiration and bring about positive change in their communities and societies.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of seeking knowledge and understanding, not only in worldly matters but also in matters of faith. It encourages us to strive for piety and righteousness, as they are the foundations upon which true wisdom is built. By embodying these qualities, we can attain a higher level of spirituality and become better servants of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that true wisdom is inseparable from piety. It reminds us that the most sagacious among us are those who are the most pious and God-conscious. By seeking knowledge, embodying piety, and making decisions based on divine wisdom, we can strive to be among those who are truly wise in the sight of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah grant us the ability to attain wisdom and piety, and may He guide us on the path of righteousness.
