Hadith #8490

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "أفْكِرْ تَسْتَبْصِرْ۔" This can be translated into English as,

Think and you will perceive.

This concise statement holds profound wisdom and guidance for Muslims in their pursuit of knowledge and understanding.

The word (afkir) "أفْكِرْ" in the Hadith means "to think" or "to ponder." It encourages Muslims to engage in deep reflection and contemplation. It emphasizes the importance of using our intellect and reasoning abilities to gain insight and understanding. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has blessed us with the capacity to think and ponder, and it is through this process that we can unlock the treasures of knowledge and wisdom.

The word (tastabsir) "تَسْتَبْصِرْ" in the Hadith means "to perceive" or "to gain insight." It implies that through thoughtful contemplation and reflection, one can attain a deeper understanding of the world around them and the truths of the faith. It encourages Muslims to seek knowledge with an open mind and a sincere heart, in order to gain true insight and wisdom.

The exegesis of this Hadith can be further illuminated by several Quranic verses that emphasize the importance of thinking, pondering, and seeking knowledge. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 164:

Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding.

This verse highlights the signs of Allah's creation as a means for reflection and understanding. By contemplating the wonders of the universe, we can gain insight into the greatness of our Creator.

Say, 'Travel through the land and observe how He began creation. Then Allah will produce the final creation. Indeed Allah, over all things, is competent.'
