خَيْرُالنّاسِ أوْرَعُهُمْ وشَرُّهُمْ أفْجَرُهُمْ۔
The best of people are the most pious amongst them and the worst of them are most immoral amongst them.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: People)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
The best of people are the most pious amongst them and the worst of them are the most immoral amongst them.
This Hadith emphasizes the importance of piety and morality in determining the excellence or inferiority of individuals.
Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (khayr) "خَيْرُ" means "best" or "excellent," while (sharr) "شَرُّ" means "worst" or "most evil." (awra'u) "أوْرَعُ" refers to the most pious or God-fearing individuals, and (afjaru) "أفْجَرُ" denotes the most immoral or wicked individuals.
To comprehend the significance of this Hadith, we turn to the Quran, which provides guidance on the qualities that define the best and worst among people. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13),
O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.
This verse highlights that the best among people are those who possess righteousness and piety. It is not based on one's lineage, wealth, or social status, but rather on their devotion to Allah and adherence to His commands. The true measure of excellence lies in one's character and conduct, which are shaped by their piety.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.
This verse emphasizes the importance of avoiding arrogance and judgmental behavior towards others. It reminds us that we should not belittle or mock others, as their inner qualities and righteousness may surpass our own. This serves as a reminder that true excellence lies in one's character and actions, rather than external appearances or worldly achievements.
Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in light of these Quranic verses, we understand that the best among Muslims are those who embody piety and righteousness. They are individuals who fear Allah, strive to fulfill their obligations, and avoid sinful behavior. Their actions are guided by the teachings of Islam, and they constantly seek to improve themselves spiritually and morally.
Conversely, the worst among Muslims are those who exhibit immorality and wickedness. They engage in sinful acts, disregard the rights of others, and neglect their responsibilities towards Allah and His creation. Their actions are driven by selfish desires and they lack the consciousness of Allah's presence in their lives.
This Hadith serves as a reminder for all Muslims to prioritize their spiritual development and moral conduct. It encourages us to strive for excellence by cultivating piety in our hearts and manifesting it in our actions. By doing so, we can become among the best of people, earning the pleasure of Allah and the respect of our fellow believers.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to embody piety and righteousness in our lives, and may He guide us on the path of excellence. Ameen.
