Not to be in need of putting forth an excuse is better than putting forth...

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Nahj al-Balagha — Peak of Eloquence: Hadith #329)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Not to be in need of putting forth an excuse is better than putting forth a true excuse.

This Hadith highlights the importance of avoiding situations where we have to make excuses for our actions or behavior. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith and explore its implications in light of the Quran.

The word (istighna) "الاِْسْتِغْنَاءُ" in the Hadith refers to not being in need or not requiring something. It implies a state of self-sufficiency and independence. The word (al-'udhr) "الْعُذْرِ" means an excuse or a justification for one's actions. It is the act of providing a valid reason to explain or defend oneself.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that it is better to be self-sufficient and not rely on excuses, even if those excuses are true. This means that we should strive to avoid situations where we have to justify our actions or make excuses for them. Instead, we should aim to be in a position where our actions speak for themselves and do not require any explanation.

This Hadith aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which encourages believers to be upright and avoid situations that may require excuses. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:27),

And recite to them the story of Adam's two sons, in truth, when they both offered a sacrifice [to Allah], and it was accepted from one of them but was not accepted from the other. Said [the latter], 'I will surely kill you.' Said [the former], 'Indeed, Allah only accepts from the righteous [who fear Him].'

This verse highlights the importance of sincerity and righteousness in our actions, as they are what truly matter in the sight of Allah.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qalam (68:2), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

Nun. By the pen and what they inscribe.

This verse emphasizes the significance of one's actions and their consequences. It encourages believers to be mindful of their deeds and strive for excellence, so that they do not find themselves in a position where they have to make excuses.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that avoiding the need for excuses is not only a matter of personal integrity but also a reflection of our level of knowledge and understanding. When we are knowledgeable and aware of the consequences of our actions, we are better equipped to make wise choices and avoid situations that may require excuses.

For example, if we are aware that certain actions are prohibited in Islam, such as backbiting or lying, we can consciously refrain from engaging in such behavior. By doing so, we eliminate the need for excuses and demonstrate our commitment to upholding the principles of Islam.

Moreover, not relying on excuses also reflects our level of self-discipline and self-control. When we have control over our desires and impulses, we are less likely to engage in actions that may lead to regret or require excuses. This self-discipline is emphasized in the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-A'raf (7:201),

Indeed, those who fear Allah - when an impulse touches them from Satan, they remember [Him] and at once they have insight.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of avoiding situations where we have to make excuses for our actions. It encourages us to strive for self-sufficiency and independence, both in our actions and in our knowledge and understanding of Islam. By being mindful of our choices and their consequences, we can lead a life that does not require excuses, reflecting our commitment to righteousness and integrity. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and wisdom to live by these teachings.
