(Ghurar al-Hikam: Amicableness)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (), his noble family, the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ), and his companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

مَنْ لَمْ يُصْلِحْهُ حُسْنُ المُداراةِ أصْلَحَهُ سُوءُ المُكافاةِ۔

This Hadith highlights the importance of amicableness and its impact on an individual's improvement or deterioration.

Let us first explore the key words in this Hadith. "حُسْنُ المُداراةِ" refers to the virtue of amicableness or good treatment towards others. It encompasses kindness, compassion, patience, and understanding in our interactions with people. "أصْلَحَهُ" means to improve or rectify, indicating that amicableness has the power to positively transform an individual. On the other hand, "سُوءُ المُكافاةِ" refers to the evil of retribution or the negative consequences that result from a lack of amicableness.

To understand the beautiful message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of amicableness and good treatment towards others. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:10), Allah says,

The believers are but brothers, so make settlement between your brothers. And fear Allah that you may receive mercy.

This verse highlights the need for reconciliation and peaceful resolution of conflicts among believers, emphasizing the importance of amicableness in maintaining harmonious relationships.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra (17:53), Allah reminds us,

And tell My servants to say that which is best. Indeed, Satan induces [dissension] among them. Indeed Satan is ever, to mankind, a clear enemy.

This verse encourages us to choose our words wisely and speak in the best manner, promoting amicableness and avoiding discord. By doing so, we protect ourselves from the influence of Satan and maintain unity within the Muslim community.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that amicableness has the power to improve an individual's character and behavior. When we treat others with kindness, respect, and empathy, we create an environment of love and harmony. This positive energy has a transformative effect on our own hearts and souls. It softens our hearts, purifies our intentions, and strengthens our connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Conversely, when we fail to practice amicableness and instead respond with hostility, anger, or revenge, we invite negative consequences into our lives. The evil of retribution mentioned in the Hadith refers to the negative outcomes that result from our own negative actions. Allah warns us in the Quran that (Surah Ash-Shura, 42:40)

And the retribution for an evil act is an evil one like it, but whoever pardons and makes reconciliation, his reward is [due] from Allah. Indeed, He does not like wrongdoers.

This verse reminds us that responding to harm with harm only perpetuates a cycle of negativity, whereas forgiveness and reconciliation lead to blessings and rewards from Allah.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, teaches us through this Hadith that amicableness is a powerful tool for self-improvement and spiritual growth. By cultivating a mindset of kindness and compassion, we not only benefit others but also elevate ourselves in the eyes of Allah. Our relationships become stronger, our hearts become purer, and our actions become more aligned with the teachings of Islam.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the transformative power of amicableness. It encourages us to treat others with kindness and compassion, seeking reconciliation and forgiveness rather than revenge. By doing so, we not only improve our own character but also contribute to a more harmonious and loving Muslim community. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to practice amicableness in all aspects of our lives and protect us from the evil of retribution.
