— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Justice And The Just)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The loftiest of endowments is justice.

This enlightening Hadith emphasizes the importance and superiority of justice in our lives. Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith, exploring its meaning and significance in light of the Quran.

The Arabic word used in this Hadith is (al-'adl) "العَدْلُ", which translates to justice. Justice is a fundamental principle in Islam, encompassing fairness, equity, and righteousness. It entails giving each person their due rights and treating them impartially, regardless of their social status, race, or beliefs.

The Quran repeatedly emphasizes the importance of justice. In Surah Al-Nisa, verse 135, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives.

This verse highlights the obligation of Muslims to uphold justice, even if it means going against their own interests or the interests of their loved ones.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ma'idah, verse 8, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm for Allah, witnesses in justice, and do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness.

This verse emphasizes the importance of being just and fair, even in the face of animosity or personal biases.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, highlights justice as the loftiest of endowments. This means that justice is not only a virtue but also a quality that elevates an individual's character and brings about numerous positive consequences.

When justice prevails in society, it leads to harmony, peace, and social cohesion. It ensures that everyone is treated fairly and their rights are protected. Justice also fosters trust and confidence among individuals, as they know they will be treated equitably. This, in turn, creates a conducive environment for growth, development, and prosperity.

Conversely, the absence of justice breeds oppression, inequality, and discord. It leads to the marginalization and mistreatment of certain individuals or groups, resulting in resentment, unrest, and even conflict. Therefore, justice is not only a personal virtue but also a crucial element for the well-being and stability of society as a whole.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we must strive to embody justice in our daily lives. We should be just in our dealings with others, whether it be in our personal relationships, professional endeavors, or societal interactions. We must ensure that our decisions and actions are guided by fairness and righteousness, upholding the principles of justice as commanded by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in the Quran.

As Muslims, we should also advocate for justice in society, speaking out against injustice and working towards its eradication. This can be done through various means, such as supporting organizations that promote justice, raising awareness about social issues, and actively participating in initiatives that aim to create a more just and equitable world.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the paramount importance of justice in Islam. It is a virtue that not only elevates our character but also has far-reaching consequences for individuals and society. Let us strive to embody justice in all aspects of our lives, following the guidance of the Quran and the teachings of our beloved Prophet Muhammad () and his purified progeny. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to uphold justice and establish a just society.
