Hadith #4782

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:

سِرُّكَ أسيرُكَ فَإنْ أفْشَيْتَهُ صِرْتَ أسيرَهُ۔

This wise utterance can be translated as:

Your secret is your prisoner but if you divulge it, you become its prisoner.

Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith by exploring the meanings of the key words. The word (sirruk) "سِرُّكَ" refers to one's secret or confidential matter. It is something that is hidden and known only to oneself. The word (asirruk) "أسيرُكَ" means your captive or prisoner. However, the Hadith warns that if you (afshaytahu) "أفْشَيْتَهُ", meaning if you disclose or reveal your secret, you (sirta asirahu) "صِرْتَ أسيرَهُ", which means you become its captive or prisoner. To Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Whether you reveal what is within yourselves or conceal it, Allah will bring you to account for it. Then He will forgive whom He wills and punish whom He wills, and Allah is over all things competent.

O you who have believed, when you converse privately, do not converse about sin and aggression and disobedience to the Messenger but converse about righteousness and piety. And fear Allah, to whom you will be gathered.

This verse highlights the importance of engaging in conversations that promote righteousness and piety, rather than discussing sinful or disobedient matters. It encourages Muslims to be cautious about the content of their private conversations, reminding them to fear Allah and be mindful of His presence.

Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in light of these Quranic verses, we can understand that keeping our secrets hidden is a sign of self-control and integrity.
